Different rules for Dems

Rushing in to inform readers that in the wake of damning investigation into his history of sexual harassment, New Yorks Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo is no longer suited for office, the New York Times editorial page waited barely 24 hours to reach its sweeping conclusion Governor Cuomo, You Should Resign.
The Times was unequivocal. What made the clarion call so jarring was it came from the same editorial page that refused for four years to demand Trump resign from office to conclude, as they did regarding Cuomo, that stepping down remained Trumps only conscionable option left, and urging him to do the right thing.
Trump ran a criminal enterprise out of the White House, which everyone at the Times understood, and still the paper could not summon the courage to call for his resignation. Yet the Times sprinted into action in order to insist a Democrat step down? The contrast is stunning even if you agree, as so many Democrats do, that Cuomo should leave office.

By not taking a public stand, newspaper leaders like those at the Times sent a loud, collective message that what Trump was doing to America did not represent a looming crisis; that the country could easily weather the storm and no drastic action was needed. Note that in 2019, New York Times executive editor Dean Baquet said he didnt really view Trump as being an unprecedented figure in American history, and likened him to Edwin Edwards, a controversial Louisiana Democratic governor from the 1970s and 1980s. (The two men have almost nothing in common.)
It's true that calls for resignation certainly would not have forced Trump from office. They would however, have helped change the national debate and more accurately reflect the crisis our country faced with a tyrannical liar at the helm. And quite simply, the calls would been the right thing to do.
The Times is right, Cuomo should resign. Too bad the paper of record failed to make that same obvious demand while Trump was shaming the Oval Office.

(3,497 posts)Cuomo needs to do the right thing and resign. He has no business occupying the Governor's office. He may be a Democrat, but that only pisses me off even more. I don't want people like him sullying the Democratic brand. He should be ashamed of himself and he needs to finally do the right thing

I remember Bob packwood and the GOP tried very hard to sweep that under the rug

(840 posts)Cuomo would have just "grabbed them by the..." it would have been ok!
Not only do the Republicans enjoy double standards under the law but they get a free pass from media who don't give a damn about reality. Probably because of their Republican bosses or simply because they, like the R's, are more concerned with how to make money from the rubes that watch and read their drek. When you get right down to it, reading the Times, listening to the major Network blab et. al. is pretty much the same miniscule, partisanly factual or imaginary information (but misinformation) from Fox. They are basically the same. Prove me wrong!
The media has been the problem maybe more so than Republicans ever since their fragile feelings were hurt by claims of Liberal Bias against them by the same Rs (arse?).
Today's media - anything but fair and balanced - for a buck.
Please don't say anything bad about us, Republicans.
Talk about snowflakes!
Maybe it's time for another "boycott" of the Times and others much like the one that sort of worked a few years ago.

(991 posts)This critique of the NYTs position in calling for Cuomo to resign when it did not call for trump to resign, does not fall into the category of whataboutery/ whataboutism, which is a Soviet propaganda tactic often employed by trump and Republicans.

(79 posts)That's why I continue to ask: what's really going on here? Instead of
joining the righteousness bandwagon, I want to know why Cuomo
is being treated like a Cosby. While Trump, Gaetz, etc. seem to be
getting off scot-free...

(32,613 posts)It's all a set-up because the NY Repukes don't want to run against Andrew Cuomo. They want to run against a weaker candidate, namely Kathy Hochul who is currently Lt. Governor. She would step up and take Cuomo's place if he resigns.
Repukes think they can beat her in the next election. There's a lot at stake because they want a Repuke in the Governor's seat to "pardon" Chump after his conviction. That's something that both Cuomo or Hochul would never do!

(840 posts)He was tried and convicted by a few "notables" who jumped to sexist conclusions.
He deserved an investigation maybe more so than Cuomo yet smaller minds were made up and the holier-than-thou lower extremity of the Democratic Party made up their collective minds while the balance didn't want to look as though we were acting like Republiqans.
Sounds eminently fair to me! But maybe we could ask a few of those who wanted Franken neutered how they feel and if they remembered rushing to judgement.

(8,392 posts). . . Their news items and editorials were quite critical of him from the beginning, and the paper supported both impeachments. If there is any particular reason they didn't specifically call on him to resign, it's probably because they knew it would be futile to do so.
At this point, the Times is merely holding Cuomo to his own conditions. When the allegations surfaced, he lectured the press about waiting until the investigation was completed. Well, now it has been.
There is no reason ANY Democrat should be defending Cuomo. This is not an Al Franken situation. Many of the women who have accused Cuomo were close aides for many, many years, and many had resolved never to come forward, but did so aftre Cuomo and his allies began trying to trash the reputations of those who initially did.
We on the left are (rightly) quick to point out whenever those on the right engage in "whataboutism." This is but another form of it!

(3,022 posts)this is what being decent human beings is about. Not getting into a contest with the Republicans to see who's leaders can be the most craven.
Spoiler alert, they will win that contest, but we will still lose our soul for playing.

(50,250 posts)that it's a real shame the media didn't care a fraction as much about Trump's sexual exploits which were, as reported by the victims, far graver than the things Cuomo is accused of. I'm not a Cuomo fan by any stretch of the imagination, but it seems Democrats merit 24/7 coverage on every channel for things like this. Republicans might get a day of coverage and then it's on to the next Democratic malfeasance.
