A bizarre security breach of a rural Colorado countys voting system has in a matter of days escalated into a criminal probe of the clerks office, a ban on the countys existing election equipment, and heightened partisan divides over election-fraud claims.
Footage that showed passwords related to the countys voting systems was surreptitiously recorded during a May security update and published last week on a far-right blog, Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold (D) said Thursday. Griswold determined Mesa County cannot use its existing equipment for its November election.
Griswold alleged Mesa County Clerk Tina M. Peters (R) allowed the breach. A spokesperson for Mesa County confirmed a criminal probe headed by the 21st Judicial District Attorneys Office was underway but said it was still in the early stages.

(9,958 posts)These sorts of actions that undermine election integrity will continue until all Republican leaders stop pushing the lie of election fraud. It is long past time for media to stop coddling them and lay put the damage they are doing to the country.

(640 posts)I listened to the press conference yesterday by Jena Griswold, our Colorado Secretary of State. The president of the County Clerks and Recorders Association, who is a Republican by the way, also spoke in a not particularly pleasant way, shall we say, regarding the event and the actions that took place.
Many protocols and regulations were not followed, including allowing a non-employee without a background check access into the May rebuild secured location where pictures were taken and later distributed to a QNon "news" site. One of the reporters questioned whether the pictures were the ones on display at Mike Lindell's cyber conference in Sioux Falls, SD but Jena Griswold didn't say yeah or nay.
There is both a criminal and civil investigation going on regarding this event. Jena Griswold said several times that she couldn't comment. She also referred reporters on a number of occasions to the District Attorney's office.
I expect that this will become a national news story as soon as the investigations are completed and charges are filed.

(50,528 posts)Fire Tina Peters, bar her from ever working for the government again, and seize property from her until the full cost of the election equipment is paid for. Start with her guns, but if it goes all the way to her forfeiting her home I wouldn't be unhappy.
