I am literally still in the highest per capita county for Covid in the worst state in the country

2 weeks ago I posted about an emergency trip to Florida to help my dad who had to be hospitalized for excruciating back pain. After 4 days at Mayo Clinic pain under control and after a week in a terrible rehab center in Jacksonville Beach he is now in a much better rehab center in his home town in Columbia County. Below is the top story in the paper of his small rural town.

Hoping to have him out of rehab by Friday and on a plane back to my home in AZ by Sunday, but time will tell.

Meantime I’ve ripped into two rehab employees that pulled down their mask to talk to dad. They were both unvaccinated. I forcefully, but pretty calmly told them I don’t want them to kill my dad. They looked surprised that I said anything. I spewed facts, told them all the Fox assholes were vaccinated and thought their audience was stupid et al.

I won’t ride in the elevator in my hotel with anyone. Less than 10 percent outside the facility are masked. I was relieved that out of my many, many relatives my two favorite uncles were vaccinated so I visited them but still wore my mask. No restaurants, loaded up on a single trip to grocery store.

Cross your fingers for me, I’m living in a Petrie dish of equal parts covid and stupidity.

Was this a Mayo Rehab facility? All employees of Mayo have to follow these mandates.

So sorry for your dad to be treated this way. Mayo here in Rochester would not tolerate such carelessness.

rehab center.

There was not a mandate at Mayo Clinic on August 4th when we arrived because on the 5th or 6th of this month I shamed a nurse into getting the vaccine one morning. That afternoon they came in and showed me their arm with bandaid. Hopefully since then They mandated the vaccine.

This was Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville.

A healthcare worker who has to be “shamed” into doing the logical/scientific/healthy thing probably wouldn’t be above lying.

That is if they have been wearing their masks long enough. You MASK UP when you are near people and want to talk to them and can take off the mask when alone again or outside. They must have been living on a cloud for the past 18 months. They wouldn't even have had to bother with that if they had gotten their vaccinations months ago!! They don't want to be criticized because they're "not sure the vaccine is safe." All these people who don't want to be judged have never had trouble judging other people before.

Coconino, Apache and Navajo counties are good and Pima's OK, but the middle of the state really sucks for vaccination.

There's an outbreak there but it's not terrible yet. I don't hold out any hope your governor's any smarter than De Satan, but at lasst he's not issuing royal proclamations about masks.

LA is still the hardest hit state and they're not getting the vax, either. People in FL started to wake up a little, probably because their idiot governor got most of the publicity for his temper tantrums. Unfortunately, the northern part pf tje state is still the deep south, and you can't fix stupid combined with ornery and the folks in Liberty, Dixie and Columbia counties would rather die like true rebels than get that damn yankee vaccine.

Things aren't that much better in Iowa, though I live in Iowa City, the most vaccinated city in the state, though students are coming back to the University of Iowa this week to spread whatever it is they've been getting in their small towns around the state. And our university won't mandate masks. Hell, even as a faculty member, I'm disallowed to even suggest that students should be vaccinated. If I'm asked, I'm supposed to defer the question. I may tell them that I'm vaccinated, but only if asked.

Oy.

FWIW, Lake City, Florida has a population about the same as Iowa City — 70,000. Iowa City is the fifth-largest city in the state, not a small town. If Lake City were in Nebraska, it would be the third-largest city in the state. Lake City would be the largest city in Wyoming.

you have the right mind-set to keep yourself safe, and to help to keep your dad safe.

I was a caretaker for my mom for several years, and her advocate when she went into a nursing home. I visited her nearly every day in the nursing home. I conversed with the staff frequently, got to know them, and made them completely aware of what my expectations were concerning my mom's care. I had a firm discussion with a doctor there who really really messed up with treating my mother. I wasn't rude with the doctor, and I was not threatening, but the doctor "coded" me. Right before security arrived and hauled my ass out of there, I looked at the doctor and said "Make sure this doesn't happen again, because I have recourse just like you have recourse. You don't want me to elevate this to the State, do you"? Her care was fine after that.

I admire how you are handling this.

Keep on keeping on... you're going to be OK. Best wishes to both you and your dad.

I don't ride on elevators anymore either.

is an article that ends with bottom line:

"Tests of Pfizer's and Johnson & Johnson's vaccines also indicate they provide at least six months of immunity, and likely longer."

Dr. Gupta will be the first to explain to anyone that a single study of any kind doesn't mean much until you have more to back it up. I'll be surprised if there is any statistically significant difference between the two mRNA vaccines when more complete and relevant data comes in.
