1. Fortunately, my neighbors all have phones, so

I don't have to chew the fat with them down at the gossip fence, like Snuffy Smith's wife. Loweezy?

9. I actually do talk to mine over the fence.

But we’ve always kept a good distance for a year now. I’m happy for my neighbors…I’m lucky.

2. God, if she or Joe Biden was president here when covid struck...

last year, the nation would've been led by a leader advising wearing masks and practicing social distancing. There wouldn't have been 500k deaths on either of their watches, nor the anti-science stupidity.

And when the vaccines came about this whole, silly vaccine hostility movement would never have developed...except for the already extant one in the anti-vaxxer community, and we'd have put covid in the rear view mirror for the most part by now.

10. Yes. How did such a large segment of the American population...

get so ignorant, anti-science, anti-democracy and unwilling to work towards the good of the whole nation?

If present conditions existed during WWll or the polio epidemic of the 50-60s we'd have lost both of those wars in terms of the nation pulling together and fighting a common enemy.

12. There have always been people this ignorant in the US. Similar proportions.

The difference is that media and information were typically centralized and authoritative. When the newsperson told you to do something, it was typically authoritative because they were likely getting it from the government or trusted source. Which in a negative way, was seen with how popular smoking was until the 1980's and 90's. You had doctors, with their lab coats talking about what cigarette they preferred. People thought, "Why would doctors lie?"

With cable and the internet, there is now more information available (good thing) and more democratized (good thing) BUT there is also more space for pieces of shit like Fox, OANN, Newsmax, etc... to lie and spread disinformation (bad thing).

In order for information to be decentralized in a good, healthy, and productive way, people have to be more educated (no, not in a university way, though it helps) in critical thinking, identifying reputable sources, and spotting propaganda and false information.

13. Agreed with all of that. And in earlier times we had...

sane, non-megalomaniacal and wannabe dictator presidents.

6. Just Amazing

They're locking-down after finding ONE case. Obviously they'll find a few more with contact tracing, but then they'll open back up.

The same thing happened in Australia last week. They did a lock-down after finding ONE case.

Real science in action. And we're stuck with the MAGA KNUCKLEHEADS with marshmallow fluff for brains.

7. How did the one case appear?

It’s remote large island nation closed off. I think we have a lot more to learn about this SARS - COVID-19. Chickpox virus stays in your spine until your immunity system is stressed and then the Shingles come out. There is a piece of the puzzle missing still and may be for a long time.
