In Los Angeles, Breakthrough Infections Are Now 30% Of All New Covid Cases Amid Delta Surge

"In March 2021, when Americans first began hearing about the Delta variant of Covid-19, breakthrough infections among fully-vaccinated Angelenos accounted for just 2% of that monthís case total. By June, when Delta accounted for 50% of all variants in Los Angeles, breakthrough infections among fully-vaccinated residents had risen to 20% of all identified cases. In late July, county officials reported that the Delta variant had overwhelmed all others, accounting for more than 90% of all positive tests analyzed for variants. As a result, the ratio of breakthrough cases increased to 30%, local health officials announced today.

While L.A. County numbers for the Delta variant have not been reported for August, as of August 19 Delta had risen to 98% of all tests genomically sequenced in California. Parallel growth in breakthrough infections has not been reported yet, but it is likely significant as well, according to Los Angeles Director of Public Health Barbara Ferrer today.

While continuing to profess the effectiveness of vaccines, Ferrer noted that the percentages of fully-vaccinated Angelenos being infected and hospitalized have also been rising over the past three months."

1. What this points out is that everyone needs to be taking precautions, and if not vaccinated, to

vaccinate

It also seems to indicate the boosters are very necessary for everyone who have been vaccinated

2. What is the breakthrough rate on folks with boosters?

Seems like they should be measuring that too.

5. Not enough numbers to measure boosters yet

They just started giving them to immune compromised last week, and wonít officially start giving to others until late September.

6. Absolutely. Unfortunately, it seems that the U.S. in tracking such data is lagging or not at all,

and we are depending on other countries who seem to be keeping track of that data much better

3. Two significant statements in this article

Overall, however, the percentages of vaccinated people who test positive, are hospitalized or die from Covid remain low ó all less than 1%.

And

Ferrer noted today that between April and mid-August, roughly 25% of the Covid-positive patients in L.A. were actually hospitalized for a reason other than the coronavirus. Their infection was detected only during a routine admission screening.

So, the vaccines are working well to prevent serious illness or death, and a large number of breakthrough cases are so mild as to be asymptomatic.

People? I can't tell.

11. +1, infections were expected so I wonder why they're called "breakthrough cases"

4. I'm starting to learn that anything can happen with Delta

My anecdotal experience as the result of a family funeral It was a double funeral for my parents who died in Spring 2020
Many folks got sick. Some tested positive, some negative. Some folks didnít get sick and tested each way

This was about 25 people all but 2 were vaxxed. A couple of the sickest tested negative, a few symptomless tested positive

7. Honestly, this sounds like there may have been another virus involved

Sick people erroneously testing negative via PCR is pretty rare. Especially with delta which produces enormous concentrations of viral material in the nose and throat.

9. This was considered yes. Bad summer colds were reported in the area

But this part of the anecdote is weird. I was symptomless and tested positive my wife was tested same time, with mild symptoms was negative. A 3x cancer survivor ( most of her lymph nodes are gone) her immune system was thought to be shot

Delta caught us out

8. Congress needs to investigate the CDC

They knew about the Delta variant and breakthrough infections as early as March

They relaxed the mask mandate and social distancing May 13

unfuckingbelievable

16. it seemed to be motivated to reopen businesses and economy

Rather than prioritize public health, then the economy.

Unfortunately there's a bipartisan consensus around that, it's just that each party has chosen different avenues to reach the same place.

12. I wonder

If you have been vaxxed and then catch the breakthrough are you full of antibodies and donít need a booster?

17. Probably.

In that case a delta infection should act as a booster.

20. Depends on the spectrum of antibodies the Delta infection generates.

I would venture to guess that a third mRNA booster shot will generate more and a wider spectrum of antibodies than the Delta infection would for a fully vaccinated person.

21. I'm confused - none of the vaccines are a 100% preventative for infection, so why all

this breakthrough talk? The media is making it appear that the vaccines are failing to stop COVID. We ALL know that some will still get sick, but hopefully the numbers of hospitalizations and deaths will be greatly reduced because they WERE vaccinated. We have lots of immuno compromised or those with under lying disease folks that I'm sure account for many of these "breakthrough" cases.

My major concern is the children that are un-vaccinated and their returning to schools across the country. We've heard of severe illness and death for those sweet ones.

They need to rebrand this "breakthrough" chatter. Many will now use this as another excuse to avoid a vaccine and take other quackery home remedies.

Sorry for the rant. I'd like to know how many vaccinated folks got sick, what percentage were hospitalized, ventilated, died, etc...and see that data in a percentage of those fully vaccinated. I'm betting that data is somewhere.
