"In March 2021, when Americans first began hearing about the Delta variant of Covid-19, breakthrough infections among fully-vaccinated Angelenos accounted for just 2% of that months case total. By June, when Delta accounted for 50% of all variants in Los Angeles, breakthrough infections among fully-vaccinated residents had risen to 20% of all identified cases. In late July, county officials reported that the Delta variant had overwhelmed all others, accounting for more than 90% of all positive tests analyzed for variants. As a result, the ratio of breakthrough cases increased to 30%, local health officials announced today.
While L.A. County numbers for the Delta variant have not been reported for August, as of August 19 Delta had risen to 98% of all tests genomically sequenced in California. Parallel growth in breakthrough infections has not been reported yet, but it is likely significant as well, according to Los Angeles Director of Public Health Barbara Ferrer today.
While continuing to profess the effectiveness of vaccines, Ferrer noted that the percentages of fully-vaccinated Angelenos being infected and hospitalized have also been rising over the past three months."

It also seems to indicate the boosters are very necessary for everyone who have been vaccinated

(4,448 posts)Seems like they should be measuring that too.

(15,598 posts)They just started giving them to immune compromised last week, and wont officially start giving to others until late September.

(92,183 posts)and we are depending on other countries who seem to be keeping track of that data much better

So, the vaccines are working well to prevent serious illness or death, and a large number of breakthrough cases are so mild as to be asymptomatic.

(7,286 posts)My anecdotal experience as the result of a family funeral It was a double funeral for my parents who died in Spring 2020
Many folks got sick. Some tested positive, some negative. Some folks didnt get sick and tested each way
This was about 25 people all but 2 were vaxxed. A couple of the sickest tested negative, a few symptomless tested positive

(4,607 posts)Sick people erroneously testing negative via PCR is pretty rare. Especially with delta which produces enormous concentrations of viral material in the nose and throat.

(7,286 posts)But this part of the anecdote is weird. I was symptomless and tested positive my wife was tested same time, with mild symptoms was negative. A 3x cancer survivor ( most of her lymph nodes are gone) her immune system was thought to be shot

Delta caught us out

(36,106 posts)They knew about the Delta variant and breakthrough infections as early as March
They relaxed the mask mandate and social distancing May 13
unfuckingbelievable

(422 posts)Rather than prioritize public health, then the economy.
Unfortunately there's a bipartisan consensus around that, it's just that each party has chosen different avenues to reach the same place.

(7,286 posts)If you have been vaxxed and then catch the breakthrough are you full of antibodies and dont need a booster?
In that case a delta infection should act as a booster.
roamer65
(36,745 posts)I would venture to guess that a third mRNA booster shot will generate more and a wider spectrum of antibodies than the Delta infection would for a fully vaccinated person.

(5,624 posts)this breakthrough talk? The media is making it appear that the vaccines are failing to stop COVID. We ALL know that some will still get sick, but hopefully the numbers of hospitalizations and deaths will be greatly reduced because they WERE vaccinated. We have lots of immuno compromised or those with under lying disease folks that I'm sure account for many of these "breakthrough" cases.
My major concern is the children that are un-vaccinated and their returning to schools across the country. We've heard of severe illness and death for those sweet ones.
They need to rebrand this "breakthrough" chatter. Many will now use this as another excuse to avoid a vaccine and take other quackery home remedies.
Sorry for the rant. I'd like to know how many vaccinated folks got sick, what percentage were hospitalized, ventilated, died, etc...and see that data in a percentage of those fully vaccinated. I'm betting that data is somewhere.
