Only 25% of the population identify as Republican. They're the fucked ones. The vast majority are not fucked, although far too many are lazy and apathetic.

Maybe it is their very loud and obnoxious presence that make them seem larger in numbers.

But, there's a pervasive notion that our population is split 50-50 Democrat-Republican. That's just not the case. It's just that the system has been rigged so badly that this minority has a far bigger voice, far more power than their numbers should have.
