As I'm heading to the checkout, two pairs of "mask combos" (one masked, one not) are meandering around in front of the registers, clinging to each other suspiciously strongly for, you know, grocery shopping. Very nice lady at the register asks her next customer to wait a moment, then goes out and confronts them together. "I'm sorry, you cannot be in this store without a mask."
The excuses don't work. She offers them free masks, then when they try to brush her off she offers a free escort off the premises with the security guard if they don't leave immediately. I almost bit my own tongue clean off stifling some bellowing laughter.
Safeway's done some things over the years that have pissed me off, but this ain't one of 'em. You go, lady!

(151,565 posts)I'm not sure I understand the "mask combos" along with the suspicious clinging for grocery shopping. What were they up to?

(6,931 posts)One spouse in a mask, the other not. The clinging together was to fend off anyone who would challenge the non-masked person. They were "up to" trying to shop without masks in a place they know they should be masked. They know they are doing wrong, just don't care.

(5,800 posts)The covidiots know most people just want to get on with their lives and don't want to get involved in a shouting match with potentially violent morons that gets everyone banned/arrested. They (and rightwankers, and obnoxious trashbags in general) count on that. They rely on civility to coddle and indulge them in a way they would never treat anyone else.

(37,436 posts)Walk into library today. Two kids from neighboring high school stroll in, one masked, the other not.
I snapped at the unmasked kid re mask and he responded that he was going to ask at the desk if he needed to wear one.
I said you dont need to ask, the sign on the door tells you that you do. Now put on a mask or get the hell out of here.
The two left.

(23,912 posts)the CDC said they were no longer necessary. But the last time I was there, 3 weeks ago, I noticed that most employees wore them, although they still did not require visitors to. I got stared at for mine.
In the 3 weeks since then, my community's infection rate has gone up to the CDC's "high" category but I don't know if the library is requiring masks again.
Stores around here require masks again for their employees, but not for customers.

My friend who also shopped there outed them on FB! 😳

(34,712 posts)people have been fairly good about indoor masking this entire summer even tho it's been optional (and lately "highly recommended" . i'm curious what it will be like in the grocery store if/when i go inside there next time. i'd say 75% had masks on last week.

(1,896 posts)Early in the pandemic we started to hear the term "essential workers" applied to folks working in grocery stores; truck drivers; rescue squad medics; Postal Service folks; police; and the like.
I noted the term "essential workers" DID NOT APPLY to lawyers; stock brokers; hedge fund managers; political office holders; trust fund kids . . . . . .
Just saying . . . .

(5,800 posts)...be aware that alternating between excessive personal bona-fides and throwing "your hate list," "mindless mob rage," etc at us is the sort of thing we've come to expect from rightwanker trolls shamming as legit liberals. I don't think there are that many "Biden/Harris masks" out there, let alone "mindless mobs" wearing them, but if anyone's being rude or passive-aggressive it's because we're so very tired of both antimaskers and rightwankers trying to play us.
If you're wearing a face shield, I have no problem with that. You're making an effort. A few of my coworkers wear both masks and face shields; other coworkers, however, drop their masks whenever they're out of the sight of supervisors, or know the current supervisor won't enforce the mandate. They're the ones I'm rude towards. And the completely unmasked clowns at the store tonight were wearing the same "who's gonna stop me" smirk that those coworkers wear, right up to the moment they were confronted. Pretty safe to say they didn't have any disorder beyond a sense of entitlement.
It's very cool if you want to promote understanding, but we're not the ones setting out to provoke a fight on this matter.
EDIT: Well, shit. The message got removed while I was picking my way through the minefield.

(777 posts)flo', as a hilarious friend says. I have an autoimmune disorder that would mean that even if I didn't die, should I be infected with Delta, I would be one of those unlucky schmucks that would end up with organ damage, if not permanent issues due to a cytokine storm followed by a spectacular spread of granulomas, which are already in my Brain, skin, lungs & heart. So, a gun & or knife wouldn't mean much to me. At least it would be fast.
I'm vaxxed but I'm on immunosuppressants to prevent my systemic Sarcoidosis from stopping my heart. So...

(44,148 posts)My Kroger has a little Starbucks kiosk in it and I often saw a mask dangling off one ear while that person managed to nurse a coffee through their entire shop. "Of course I wore a mask when I came in the store, but I have to take it down to drink my coffee, right?"
They could, of course, get the coffee as they left the store and then remove their mask outside or in their vehicle.

(1,535 posts)a few weeks back where a mom flying from Denver to Austin was whining about how she got kicked off the plane because she was trying this same nonsense with feeding her kid a constant supply of candy rather than making him wear a mask. The flight attendant said, nope, the remove mask to eat/drink is meant to be so you can consume something QUICKLY, not have an excuse to keep your mask off for an extended period and kicked them off the flight.

(5,800 posts)As if the pretzel bits flying out of his mouth formed some sort of protective, absorbent shield!
Comes sauntering over to "chat" with me; naturally, gets defensive ("But I'm eating?" ) then pissy when told to stay back until his mask was back up. (Another thing these Mommy's Li'l Rebels can't cope with is social distancing. "Why would these foolish mortals resist basking in my presence? Mother says I am a special case!" )

(20,658 posts)clinging to each other suspiciously strongly for, you know, grocery shopping
How do you cling together suspiciously? And if they weren't grocery shopping what were they doing, having a two (four?) person parade?
Grokenstein
(5,800 posts)a couple, very very VERY attracted to each other, one arm tight around the partner's waist, just enough room to walk without tripping each other up, heads mashed together.
Perfectly normal for, say, coming out of a bar. For picking up some frozen veggies and Häagen-Dazs? Not so much. If it weren't for the one-masked, one-not combos I would've suspected they were just bad at shoplifting.
Now imagine two pairs like that, walking back and forth in front of the checkout. So, yeah, kind of having a parade.
