My friend is in the hospital with Covid, on oxygen.

We were in high school together and she was my best friend. We kept in touch over the years, although not maybe as often as we could have.

I learned last night that her husband died a few days ago, from Covid. She's in pretty bad shape.

No, I don't know their vaccination status. However, I'm guessing that it would be pretty damn miraculous for both of them to have gotten this sick with breakthrough infections, at the same time. So I'll make a wild guess that they weren't vaccinated.

I'm mad as hell, sad, worried, and ... mad as hell! This could all have been prevented. I'm certain of it. If she pulls through, I want to call her and ask WTFFFF???!!!! But that wouldn't be very nice, I know.

FUCK all the Tucker Carlsons and other right-wing and evangelical fucking assholes who made getting vaccinated against a deadly virus something about God or politics or whatever. It's about staying well and keeping your fellow citizens well and ending the fucking pandemic!

Fuck. That's all. Thanks for listening. (FUCK!!!!)

But, general understanding aside, breakthorugh cases themselves are not rare. My employee (one of the most careful people I know) is out with COVID. Her family of 5 (both adults vaccinated) all have it. Delta is scary-contagious.

of our county health department said that several of the county's cases are breakthrough infections. She also said that some of the deaths were breakthrough cases in seniors with comorbidities.

Most of the deaths here have been people in their 80s and 90s, but there were a few younger ones. The youngest was in his 20s, unvaccinated.

I have been following the county's dashboard. In the past week there has been a spike in cases among people under 19, probably due to schools reopening.

Our rates now are equal to last winter during the post holiday spike. Some days the number of new infections exceeds the rate from last winter.

if you are vaccinated. There's absolutely no doubt about that. It is uncommon for someone who has been vaccinated and comes down with COVID to need hospitalization, or to die.

So - yes - GET VACCINATED!!!!! NOW!!!

But - too many people who believe that breakthrough cases are rare are not taking the precautions that they need to in order to avoid spreading COVID.

So - also - WEAR YOUR MASK, STAY HOME WHEN YOU GET THE SNIFFLES, A SORE THROAT, A HEADACHE, ETC. UNTIL YOU GET A NEGATIVE TEST. Don't be part of the problem.

The fact that it (severe illness/death) was almost totally preventable for most, so compounds the tragedy.

I hope she pulls through. Covid 19 is a scary disease. The fact that over 600,000 Americans have died from it, many before the game changer vaccines became available late last year, early this year. It's absurd to me that given that these are very safe and effective, some people still refuse to get vaccinated. It's seems akin to Russian roulette.

god knows how many lives are affected, and I swear those MAGA-types have an addiction to whacky world. Throwing away their lives, for what? Got to be a pay off in there somewhere. I hope your friend pulls through, and you can give her what for, after she recovers.

Fully vaccinated people actually dying from Covid are rare, and has been pointed out are generally elderly and/or have co-morbidities.
