PLAINS, Ga. >> Ex-President Jimmy Carter, the oldest former U.S. chief executive ever, will quietly mark his 97th birthday at home in southwest Georgia on Friday, an aide said.
Slowed by age in recent years and keeping a low profile during the coronavirus pandemic, Carter doesnt plan on any public appearances, said press secretary Deanna Congelio at the Carter Center in Atlanta.
Workers at the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site in tiny Plains recorded greetings for the former president, and members of the public can sign an online birthday card at www.cartercenter.org.
Dozens sent early birthday greetings, and many didnt even mention Carters Democratic presidency from 1977-81. Instead, they said they were inspired by Carters post-presidential life that has included volunteer work, authorship of multiple books, advocacy for justice and years of teaching Sunday school.
We love you for your honesty, consistency and for being so articulate, said one message. Many shared photos of themselves with Carter and his wife Rosalynn, who celebrated 75 years of marriage in July.

(205,224 posts)He's been my favorite since I was old enough to vote. I have his autobiography, "A Full Life: Reflections at 90" published in 2015. He really has led as fascinating life - and I discovered that I really do agree with him on pretty much everything. I recommend it highly.

(268,931 posts)follow the interview with Willie Nelson about smoking weed at the WH. Willie never named his herb smoking partner but Carter made it clear that it was his son. He wasn't going to allow the helo to be the guilty party.
Jimmy Carter is a class act.

His post-presidency is the standard by which all others will be judged.

(21,560 posts)He was destroyed by the media in his time but I think people today are waking up to how good of a president he really was. His defeat by Reagan should be a cautionary tail for future generations. Look at what havoc it brought.

(4,585 posts)The best president of my lifetime. He was back-stabbed by traitorous republicans and some scurrilous Democrats.
