DELEGATE ALEX ASKEW STATEMENT ON PATTERN OF RACIST MAILERS

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA — Delegate Alex Askew (HD-85) today denounced a GOP attack mailer sent to thousands of his constituents depicting him as bound and hanging by taut rope as overtly racist. The mailer comes just three weeks after a separate racially discriminatory attack that showed his likeness burning.

“Depicting any black person as burning or hanging propagates some of the most dangerous, racist tropes in history,” said Askew. “I’m a black man. These dog whistle attacks have no place in our politics.”

Askew called on Karen Greenhalgh and the Republican Party of Virginia to immediately apologize for the renderings and demanded accountability on racism in the Delegate race.
