Top Trump aides set to defy subpoenas in Capitol attack investigation

Source says Meadows, Bannon and others will move to undercut House select committee inquiry – under instructions from Trump

Former Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and other top aides subpoenaed by the House select committee investigating the Capitol attack are expected to defy orders for documents and testimony related to 6 January, according to a source familiar with the matter.

The move to defy the subpoenas would mark the first major investigative hurdle faced by the select committee and threatens to touch off an extended legal battle as the former president pushes some of his most senior aides to undercut the inquiry.

All four Trump aides targeted by the select committee – Meadows, deputy chief of staff Dan Scavino, strategist Steve Bannon and defense department aide Kash Patel – are expected to resist the orders because Trump is preparing to direct them to do so, the source said.

The select committee had issued the subpoenas under the threat of criminal prosecution in the event of non-compliance, warning that the penalty for defying a congressional subpoena would be far graver under the Biden administration than during the Trump presidency.

House committee investigating January 6 can't find Trump aide to serve subpoena

Washington (CNN)More than a week after subpoenaing former Donald Trump aide Dan Scavino to cooperate with its investigation into the January 6 riot at the US Capitol, the House select committee investigating the attack has been unable to physically serve the subpoena to him, according to multiple sources familiar with the effort.

The news comes just days before the committee's deadline for Scavino and three other close allies of the former President to comply with subpoenas requesting documents by October 7 and a deposition by October 15.

Scavino, Trump's former White House deputy chief of staff, did not respond to CNN's request for comment. One source familiar with the situation joked that the committee should just tweet the subpoena to the former Trump aide since he's been actively trolling the panel there in recent days.

The other Trump aides who have been subpoenaed include former Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, former adviser Steve Bannon and Kash Patel, a former chief of staff to then-acting Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller.

Yes, soon it will be Kornacki time and we all know that nothing gets done in an election year. Dems had better start canceling vacations.

Wait for it though, we will soon be told that we don't know what we don't know our DOJ is doing.

Meanwhile, anyone hear mention of an effort to pass S1?

if documents are due tomorrow, I would think failure to do so would constitute contempt of Congress subject to referral to the DOJ.

Rep. Thompson is either going to refer, or set the tone that the subpoenas won't have much behind them.

That defying a Congressional subpoena carries penalties. With Adam Schiff, Jamie Raskin, and even Liz Cheney on the Jan.6th committee, NO ONE is above the law.

The real threat of Federal prison is no laughing matter.

Dr. Fauci should just switch on the 5G chips that were implanted in his COVID vaccinations and just home-in on his signal.

All kidding aside, if he's carrying a mobile phone, it should be easy for the DOJ to keep track of him.

Arrest them! Throw them in jail!

When Trump was in office they got away with things because Dems knew Trump would get them out and pardon them.

Of course, someone will probably bail them out, but let them rot in jail for a day or so.

Let a citizen bring them in to face justice if they defy subpoena.

Keep in mind that it took six fricking months to get Barr under oath.

Basically, subpoenas are as worthless as the paper they are printed on for Republicans.

How is that possible? Obviously this snubbing was planned the moment the R's refused to hold a Senate inquiry into the matter. Why haven't the Democrats been prepared for this? And that raises the question of maybe there is nothing they can do, or they would have. Which is a depressing thought.

Trump and his fascism cohorts tried a fast insurrection. Didn't work. Now they will try a slow burn insurrection. Change voting laws in their favour, and simply refuse to obey any summons or subpoenas.

And if history is any indication, Democrats have no recourse. Whatever verdict comes out of their inquiry will be dismissed and scoffed at by Republicans partly because of a lack of witness evidence. And that would be because of their own refusals. But they'll paint it as a witch hunt and unfair process etc etc etc...with the outcome already decided so why bother?
