Tesla moves headquarters from California to Texas

Tesla is moving its headquarters from Palo Alto, California, to Austin, Texas, CEO Elon Musk announced at the company’s shareholder meeting on Thursday.

The meeting took place at Tesla’s vehicle assembly plant under construction outside of Austin on a property that borders the Colorado River, near the city’s airport.

However, the company plans to increase production in its California plant regardless of the headquarters move.

“To be clear we will be continuing to expand our activities in California,” Musk said. “Our intention is to increase output from Fremont and Giga Nevada by 50%. If you go to our Fremont factory it’s jammed.”

But, he added, “It’s tough for people to afford houses, and people have to come in from far away....There’s a limit to how big you can scale in the Bay Area.”

Musk has built a battery factory near a lithium mine damned near everywhere in the world.

I expect Tx will see more of Musk's intent as time goes.

The area bounded by Austin, Houston, and Dallas has a thriving engineering and information technology sectors. It's not a bad place for a company to locate if they need that kind of talent.

Can someone give another reason, and then be turned down, because the authorities don’t believe the answer and must be forced to reside in state?

Is this idea from New York City’s idea of punishing any wealthy person who moves by hunting them down in their new state and fleecing them for exorbitant amounts of money as punishment for moving?

Maybe we should just make it flat illegal to move out of Democratic states unless your reason is approved by the state.

Musk last year expressed deep disenchantment with the Golden State. During a standoff with authorities over his plans to reopen operations in Fremont amid stay-at-home orders aimed at containing the spread of COVID-19, he tweeted, “Frankly, this is the final straw. Tesla will now move its HQ and future programs to Texas/Nevada immediately.”

When Alameda County’s director of public health told Musk he had to suspend manufacturing, Musk called her order “fascist” and volunteered to be arrested. The county reversed course, allowing Fremont to stay open.

Manufacturers across the state complain about California’s living costs, business costs, taxes, bureaucratic red tape and what are decried as onerous regulations. But Tesla has enjoyed billions in subsidies from the state and the federal government and gets state tax breaks from the California Alternative Energy and Advanced Transportation Financing Authority.

I hope that State can claw back these subsidies

We worship “entrepreneurs” who are wealthy by equating them to being “great”. In the case of Musk he is an extractor. If California is so expensive to live then pay your people more. This is not about the cost of living in California. This is about Musk and extraction.

I know I annoyed some people before over Musk and SpaceX but…

Fuck Elon Musk.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.teslarati.com/tesla-lithium-hydroxide-facility-cybertruck-gigafactory-texas/amp/

Start Date 2022.

Tesla is building a lithium hydroxide refinery in Texas for its Cybertruck factory.

A recent report from market intelligence publisher Benchmark Mineral Intelligence has revealed that Tesla is poised to build a lithium hydroxide chemical plant in Texas. The lithium hydroxide refinery will reportedly be situated in Texas, and it will be used to feed the upcoming Cybertruck Gigafactory.

The spodumene conversion facility will be built adjacent to Gigafactory Texas, and based on Benchmark Minerals’ report, the facility has a target date of Q4 2022 for its start of operations. This is a notably aggressive timeframe for such a facility, though it is something distinctly Tesla. Ultimately, the lithium hydroxide refinery will add to Tesla’s plans to set up a cathode facility in Texas, which Elon Musk has described as part of the electric car maker’s cell production plan.

SNIP
The upcoming conversion/refining plant will turn hard rock spodumene ore into lithium hydroxide, which is used directly in battery cells. It should be noted that prior to Tesla’s battery efforts, this process has traditionally been performed in China using spodumene that’s sourced from Australia. In its report, Benchmark Minerals noted that Tesla will be using a hydrometallurgical process to turn its spodumene ore into lithium hydroxide, effectively eliminating the use of sulphuric acid. This process, however, remains untested in the commercial scale.

Interestingly enough, a recent announcement from Australian mining firm Piedmont Lithium has revealed that Tesla has signed a five-year deal to acquire spodumene from a mine in North Carolina. In its press release, Piedmont noted that its Tesla deal represents about one-third of the expected 160,000 tonnes per annum that’s expected to be produced at its North Carolina mine.
This deal will likely supply Tesla with 8,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide a year, starting between July 2022 and July 2023.

It is new and as your link noted has not been scaled.

The above discusses the currently used process. The writer notes that processing of spodumene has been done in China to basically push environmental issues into a black hole.

The key message of this discussion is that if lithium is going to be a mainstay of our global economy, we must be focused on the environmental impact of our lithium production industry, which is now in its infancy.

I like how the article spoke of the process.
I already hate Lithium mining & the exploitation & secrecy of the process & its impact.

It is as exploitable as petroleum, with its own toxic environmental hazards. Until someone sounds the alarm & media tells the truth of Lithium, Musk will continue to enjoy the image of the Capatalist who saved the environment.

This article takes on the reality of Lithium.

👍🍃Excellent read.
