contempt referral

Two close allies of former President Donald Trump former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and former Pentagon aide Kash Patel are "engaging with" the Jan. 6 select committee on its subpoena, the panel's top two lawmakers said Friday.
Panel chair Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) and vice chair Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) confirmed in a statement that the two Trump associates had been in touch with the panel. Thompson and Cheney also threatened criminal contempt for former Trump campaign chief Steve Bannon, who had informed the committee he wouldn't cooperate with their inquiry into the Jan. 6 Capitol attack.
Though the Select Committee welcomes good-faith engagement with witnesses seeking to cooperate with our investigation, we will not allow any witness to defy a lawful subpoena or attempt to run out the clock, and we will swiftly consider advancing a criminal contempt of Congress referral," Thompson and Cheney said.

(2,262 posts)They are STALLING. Unless they have handed over actual computers, records, hard drives, paper memos, then they aren't really complying.
They will just stall and stall until we lack the will to continue or their party steals the next election.
It should not be this hard to get government documents.

Where did get that number from? The Select Committee was only established in July and it only had a few hearings before the traditional summer recess. Biden was inaugurated on January 20th and Gatland wasn't sworn in until the end of February. The people under supheona here are powerful players on the Republican side and you don't go hunting big game with a BB gun. The very fact that Meadow s is cooperating should tell you that he knows how serious this is. The players may be jerks but thier attorneys are not and I am sure they have explained the dangers of not cooperating with the investigation. The problem we have is that we are so used to the Republicans telegraphing everything they are going to do and we get pissed off when the Democrats run an investigation the proper way without any leaks.

(9,663 posts)Many people, including me and perhaps yourself, are frustrated at the ability of powerfully connected or wealthy bad actors to delay or avoid consequences.
With time running out before our system shifts attention to the mid-terms, I hope to soon see the end results of this investigation leading to just rewards for the principals along with the pawns. We shall see.
You are absolutely correct that I am frustrated as to how slowly things seem to be moving. However I want things to be as thorough as possible so that these scumbags get convicted and lose on appeal. Being in a courtroom whether you are the plaintiff, defendant or a witness gas a very sobering affect on most people. My only fear is that Garland gets caught up in political persecution vs the reality of real criminal malfeasance by Banmon. Meadows and Patel.

(268,913 posts)A lawyer for Steve Bannon says the former White House aide won't comply with a House committee's investigation into the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol because former U.S. President Donald Trump is asserting executive privilege to block demands for testimony and documents.
Two other witnesses subpoenaed by the panel, former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and former Pentagon aide Kash Patel, are engaging with the committee, according to its Democratic chairman, Mississippi Rep. Bennie Thompson, and Republican vice chairwoman, Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming. Thompson and Cheney issued a statement Friday after a deadline for document production had passed.
Though the Select Committee welcomes good faith engagement with witnesses seeking to cooperate with our investigation, we will not allow any witness to defy a lawful subpoena or attempt to run out the clock, and we will swiftly consider advancing a criminal contempt of Congress referral, the two lawmakers said.
A spokesman for the panel declined to comment on the status of a fourth witness, former Trump communications aide Dan Scavino.
