Trying to think of a way that citizenship could be defined by allegiance to a virtual state rather than a state presiding over a geography. Maybe really smart people could figure it out. We’re nearly there already, with people in their heads identifying with red America or blue. I know I have more in common with some people outside the geographic boundary of the USA than some people within it. As it is now, red America blocks any progress I would hope to see toward a more egalitarian social democratic state, and I certainly hope to block red America’s progress toward an authoritarian, theocratic, kleptocratic kakistocracy. We need to find our way to a relatively amicable divorce because red/blue visions of the good life and the good state are exclusionary. So, yes, let’s get creative. Maybe there’s ways to separate that don’t require the establishment of contiguously bounded land-mass nation states. Or not — we could reenact the 1947 India-Pakistan separation, load our stuff on ox carts and wheelbarrows and embark to the promised land (promised to be free of them others, which isn’t a high minded goal but like divorce can at least open the way to new questions).
