An East Tennessee man says he will never get on another airplane. He was kicked off of a United Airlines flight from Denver to Knoxville for reasons tied to his disability.
WBIR sat down with Adron Mccarter, who explained what happened and how the airline responded.
He said it was his first time flying on an airplane. He said everything was running smoothly until he started heading home. He said a pilot refused to fly the aircraft with his dialysis machine on board.
This was particularly difficult for Mccarter because he depends on the machine to live, and he said and he went through the extra paperwork to ensure he could bring it on his flight. His at-home dialysis machine, he said, was supposed to provide freedom.
You can travel and it opens up the world so you're not tied up to a clinic that's 'x' amount of miles away from your house," he said.
But there are still constant setbacks that come along with his kidney disease. He said that his dialysis treatments limit his ability to travel as much as hed like to

What the cornbread hell is WRONG with people? This pilot should be suspended without pay until he completes disability training

(153,138 posts)seems strange, this surely cannot be the first time a person has had to travel with medical equipment, the airline needs to determine what happened and adequately compensate this passenger

(9,962 posts)He cleared things with the airline ahead of time and carried the extra paperwork with him. It was entirely the pilot who screwed him over.

(9,962 posts)That's what my brother always says. It was one of their subsidiaries )Skywest), but yeah. They can have my "Shithouse of the Skies" traveling trophy for this one.

(54,325 posts)The last time I took them, they "had a problem" with our booking, even though we were confirmed, business class Dallas to Frankfurt. They let us stew at the checkin counter--not in line, but AT the counter--for 90 minutes, and then told us we were too late to check in. They were obviously overbooked, and didn't want to pay anybody. They then rebooked us for the next day, didn't even offer to help us with accommodations for the night, nothing. They suck as badly as any other airline I can think of. I now call them Albanian, although that is probably an insult to the Albanians.

(3,622 posts)I worked for American for 31 years, the last three for the USAir gang that took over management of the operation after American emerged from bankruptcy.
As arrogant as American was before bankruptcy, the a**hole factor never matched the levels introduced by USAir.

(54,325 posts)My outfit is based in Dallas, and we travel a LOT. Asia, South America, Europe, and all over the USA. We have several platinum-for-life frequent flyers on American, and it's difficult to wean one's self off of a hub airline that flies in and out of your front yard. But we're trying--in the interests of self-preservation and sanity, if nothing else.

(7,826 posts)Regarding the pilot and the kidney dialysis passenger, I would give a very substantial set of airline travel.
Regarding the flight attendant, unfortunate.
