(15,800 posts)College seniors who couldn't differentiate between wore/war and our/are . . . some were so bad that I had to read their papers out loud in order to get the gist of what they were trying to say. Lack of paragraphs and missing punctuation often added to the confusion. It was infuriating that these students made it out of high school and then into college with such poor skills. I tried to encourage them to participate in the free writing labs, pointing out that they would not graduate unless they could pass the written English essay exam. Some were glad for that encouragement.
