Before that you have to go back to the Viking era (or the Nazi occupation, but then, those were Nazis). They just don't kill each other very much there, and when they do they seem to use knives more often than guns, which are, of course, heavily regulated. A lot of people do have hunting rifles, but those, too, have to be registered.

In the US mass murders, almost always with guns, happen just about every day. There was a mass shooting in St. Paul just last weekend.
