Doctors say he is responding well to IV antibiotics.
Just heard in CNN.

Hes clearly had muscle wasting for a long time IMO. Of course it could be a variety of other conditions but to me it didnt look like simple weight loss.
That or some chronic condition associated with cancer.
On edit: the sepsis could be a result of a suppression of his immune system.

(16,950 posts)He had a couple bypasses or something. I remember some press about him going vegan because of heart issues.

He had to change his diet because of his heart problems. That's why he's lost weight.

Hope Bill is ok, and wonder why UCI?

(16,950 posts)admission! Ive heard over the years its getting harder and harder to get in to the UC system, so thats an accomplishment.
Im also curious why he was taken to UCI. Maybe it was closest to where he was. I saw one article saying he was at the UCI in Orange. Thats probably 20 minutes to a half hour from a premiere hospital in Newport, so maybe he was fairly urgent.

(2,894 posts)and summer school credit... and she plans to become an occupational therapist. She (as a 2020 graduate) really took a hit, with the best part of senior year cancelled (and dance recitals with her senior solo, the school play she was in... etc.)... and she got into several East Coast colleges, but couldn't visit because of the pandemic, so eventually decided on UCI, partly because a close high school friend is also attending, and they missed all those months together. These kids are resilient, though... much more so than all the whiny Republicans, moaning about how oppressive masks and vaccines are! (And her apt. complex has a pool, which is a nice change for a kid from SF!)

(16,950 posts)all the plans. She chose a great career path.
That whole area is very nice around the campus, and theres Laguna Beach to explore artsy things, lots of nice upscale places. Shell have fun now, a welcome change from being hit with having to wait Covid out at such a transitional time in her life! Good times ahead.

(1,944 posts)At the end of 2019 my husband had a serious heart issue that the VA in Long Beach couldn't handle. They sent him to UCI where he was given the most amazing care and one of their cardio-electrophysiologists (what a mouthful!!) solved his issue, which had been deemed to be unfixable previously. He recovered there for a week and I can't say enough what a top notch place it is. Even their cafeteria is impressive, lol! If Clinton is there, he will be getting the best care.

My heart sank when I heard this.
and I don't know what started it. He died quickly from it. I heard it was a result of a urinary infection for Clinton so I imagine he is not very comfortable. Serious business.

(28,313 posts)Sepsis kills. Frequently. Easily. Sometimes very quickly.
Optimism is great, but they kept this quiet for 2 days and put him in the ICU. I'm glad he's better, but you don't stick people in the ICU for "privacy" in the middle of a pandemic. That's a REALLY lame cover story.
MsLeopard
(1,265 posts)And the fact that hes been admitted for two days already and in ICU leads me to believe it may have been a serious condition they wanted to keep quiet, and theyre only talking about it now because theyre confident he will recover, the crisis has ended. I hope my theory is correct.

Cuomo can be an insufferable jerk at times like now. Sepsis can take you QUICK. Sounds like they caught it in time, but still this is nothing to downplay, given Clintons age and heart issues.

(107,710 posts)Former president Bill Clinton was hospitalized earlier this week for an issue not related to covid-19 and is recovering, his spokesman said Thursday.
Clinton was admitted to the University of California Irvine Medical Center on Tuesday to receive treatment for a non-Covid-related infection, his spokesman Angel Ureña said in a statement.
He is on the mend, in good spirits, and is incredibly thankful to the doctors, nurses, and staff providing him with excellent care," Ureña said.
-snip-
Clintons doctors, Alpesh Amin and Lisa Bardack, issued a joint statement Thursday night saying Clinton was responding well to treatment for his infection.
He was admitted to the hospital for close monitoring and administered IV antibiotics and fluids. He remains at the hospital for continuous monitoring," they said. "After two days of treatment, his white blood cell count is trending down and he is responding to antibiotics well.

(1,944 posts)I mentioned above that my husband was treated at UCI for a heart issue. The doctors, interns, staff were so impressive and they had amazing new equipment that was able to make a '3-D' map of his heart so it could be repaired.

(16,950 posts)probably has more round the clock staff / residents including cardiac, etc. If he is really in sepsis they probably wouldn't put him in a VIP room anyway -- other than very few places (military around DC mostly) VIP rooms are more for general medical or surgical issues, not cardiac or icu care.

(16,950 posts)He had a urinary tract infection that spread to his bloodstream. Is that sepsis? Someone brought up Hoag Hospital -- probably a lot more private rooms there for a VIP, so that is curious.

Love Bill Clinton! Saw him in person when he was campaigning for Hillary in Southern California and was just mesmerized by him. Such star power! He is the only president/ex-president I've seen in person. Women were swooning as he walked the rope line. He is such a mega star. Get well soon, President Clinton!

(54,268 posts)The first time I met him was during his first term in office, and he looked good, but was NOT "skinny." He was only 49 at the time. I didn't actually get to talk to him again until about ten years later, and the difference was startling. He was skinny as a rail, and in someone that tall, it really stands out if you knew him before. But he really seemed healthy, not at all sickly. It has been a few years now, but a friend of mine is the mother of Chelsea's husband, and she said he still looked great--although this is now two years ago. In your mid-seventies this can obviously change rapidly.
A severe infection can hit anyone. In 2003, on the way to our younger daughter's high school graduation in Waimea, we stopped off in San Francisco to give my wife's (then-) 76 year old mom a rest from the travel. Our elder daughter, 20 years old at the time, started feeling bad, and didn't want to come out with us at all. She was feeling worse by the time we got to Kona on the Big Island, and we took her to a hospital. They said she might have a serious streptococcus infection, so they took a throat swab, and freaked out. It was off the charts. They laid her down and hooked her up to a liter (!!!) of IV antibiotics. They said she might not have lived two days if we hadn't brought her in.
These things are not to be trifled with. I hope Bill Clinton makes it out of this OK. He is 75. That's not super-old by today's standards, but his body went through a lot with the bypass, and that diet means you have to look for protein sources outside the traditional meat and eggs. I have heart issues, too, and swore off red meat and butter nearly thirty years ago. Still, my wife, a master chef, adapted instantly, and her fish and poultry dishes are so amazing, I haven't lost weight at all. With Bill Clinton, it was night and day.
I hope we still have his voice around for many years to come. He does have a lot of determination, so I think he should come out of this. If his doctors know the least bit about what they're doing--and I'm sure they know plenty--they will not treat this lightly, and keep him locked up until he's truly well enough to be out and about again.

(6,785 posts)She was already disabled by multiple allergies, and was in a small town hospital (wich I'm sure did not have the resources to deal with a sepsis patient who already had a compromised immune system.) Bill is, what, twice her age? but lacking that pre-existing conditon and receiving top of the line care. I think his chances are good - and I also hope so.
