John Deere strike, Day 1

Speaking for myself, I hope these office workers that are getting gang-pressed to service have a greater respect for those workers who are on strike after this. (And I hope that respect bubbles up to the folks doing the gang-pressing.)

John Deere is trying to break a strike by having salaried office workers operate heavy machinery, let’s see how that’s going—

From @jonahfurman:
"didn't even make it to 8am without a 911 call."
"Non-union salaried worker crashed a tractor inside the plant."

area when Deere went out on strike in 1980 or 81. We were busy as hell for the first couple of weeks, when most of the workers treated it as a vacation. From then on, the mall was a ghost town, as 30% of the area was out of work.

The home office in Houston demanded to know why sales were down. The couldn’t understand why striking workers weren’t buying diamonds, Rolexes, silver flatware, and porcelain giftware. I told them we had sold the one person who had come into the store the day before — a watch battery.

I hope the strike is short.
