This is so disturbing.....

BTW, I don't have a subscription to the Washington Post but I guess I haven't reached my monthly limit. I apologize if you hit the paywall. If so, it's probably in other articles - Key words: Carrollton, Texas -Southlake High School -Holocaust....

1. It's been posted here a few times in the past few days VERY depressing:
Texas school official tells teachers that Holocaust books should be countered with ‘opposing’ views
A North Texas school district apologized late Thursday after an administrator advised teachers that if they have books about the Holocaust in their classrooms, they should also include reading materials that have “opposing” perspectives of the genocide that killed millions of Jews.
During a training session on what books teachers can have in their classroom libraries, Gina Peddy, executive director of curriculum and instruction for the Carroll Independent School District, referenced a new Texas law that requires educators to present multiple perspectives when discussing “widely debated and currently controversial” issues. “Just try to remember the concepts of [House Bill] 3979,” Peddy said on Oct. 8, according to a recording obtained by NBC News, which first reported the story. “And make sure that if you have a book on the Holocaust that you have one that has an opposing, that has other perspectives.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/education/2021/10/15/holocaust-texas-school-books-opposing/ As a Jew I gotta say I will stay outta texas. Here in Illinois our Governor was one of the founders of The Illinois Holocaust Museum. Also, Chicago public schools are teaching in 8th and 10th grade about jon burge the infamous police commander who tortured hundreds of Black men into false confessions over decades. https://www.chicagotorturejustice.org/education I feel so bad for those living in Texas who are suffering so much. |

3. And I think we should all be equally appalled at the banning of Critical Race Theory in schools.
The NC state legislature made it illegal for schools to teach about racism. That is just as bad as Holocaust denialism. It stems from the same fear - white people panicking as the truth is being revealed.
As a white woman, my message to them is "wake up and smell the coffee." |

5. Teaching about the history of racism in America is not Critical Race Theory
CRT is taught in law schools and post-grad sociology classes.
It's not about teaching American history. |

8. I understand that, but a lot of Republicans are very confused about this.
They are holding up CRT as a bogey man and using it to ban teachers from discussing racism. The impact is exactly the same as Holocaust denial.

11. is it possible the person who made the Holocaust statement
was trying to draw a parallel?
A couple points from the article (keeping to the 4 paragraph rule; I wish I could post more): When Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) signed HB 3979 into law on Sept. 1, the state prohibited teachers from discussing “a particular current event or widely debated and currently controversial issue of public policy or social affairs.” The law states that if a teacher does engage in that kind of discussion in the classroom, the educator is required to “explore such issues from diverse and contending perspectives without giving deference to any one perspective.” Critics of Texas’s latest policy say it could stifle conversations about historical and current events in classrooms if teachers feel required to alter how they educate students. An updated version of the law, Texas Senate Bill 3, will take effect in December. { RandomNumbers comment: I don't see a summary of the new bill in article. But, it's Texas, so … } … The district’s issue of what books can be available in the classroom came up last year at Johnson Elementary School in Southlake, about 30 miles northwest of Dallas. Rickie Farah, who teaches fourth grade and was named a Carroll ISD teacher of the year, made “This Book Is Anti-Racist” by Tiffany Jewell available in the classroom. But when a student brought home a copy of the book — a New York Times bestseller described by Kirkus Reviews as a “guidebook for taking action against racism” — the child’s parents complained to the district that it was inappropriate for her age and grade level, the Dallas Morning News reported. Although Carroll ISD initially decided against disciplining Farah, the school board last week voted to overturn the district’s decision and reprimanded the teacher. The move set off unease among teachers in the district, who wondered if they, too, would be disciplined for having certain books in their classrooms. … People seem to be treating this as if Peddy was literally giving that advice, to teach "both sides" of The Holocaust. But it seems they are being told they have to teach "both sides" or racism!! |

13. Yes, the purpose of the law is to keep teachers from discussing racism.
I don't know the intentions of the curriculum director who said what she said about the Holocaust. I assumed she was sincere in her bigotry but maybe she was trying to make a point.
It's all part of the white supremacist patriarchal bullshit taking over the country, |

Eisenhower wanted the Holocaust and death camps thoroughly documented because he knew there would be these evil scum who would try to deny it.

9. niyad....
I've been back working full-time, and I'm often too tired when I get home to even watch Rachel. Sometimes I'm a little behind on current news.
To whom did you express your feelings to? Did you call the school district? That's what I effing feel like doing! As a native Texan (but I've lived in California for most of my adult life - since 1988), I'm appalled. I have two adult nephews who live in Austin. They're very, very progressive. They both have young children but not biological. One nephew is married to someone who had a child from a previous marriage. He's eight. My other nephew and his wife adopted two children. The girl is from Ethiopia and is 10. The little boy is two and is from Guadalajara. |

10. I lived in TX twice. The first time, as a child, I had no choice. The second time was a poor
decision, based on the erroneous assumption that the wonderful people I met at IWY in Houston were the norm. Alas, nothing that I am seeing there now surprises me. The good and wonderful people I met and worked with, the good people now, are fighting so hard for their state, and I admire their courage and determination.
I called the estimable gina peddy directly. It was a rather one-sided conversation. Called the board members, left voice-mail. Not sure that it does any good, but they need to know how their actions are viewed by sane people. |
