vaccination reduces hospitalization in those 65+ by 94%, but it can't prevent all deaths
but anecdotes hijack our primitive minds, built for another age

(95,243 posts)Given his cancers and their treatment, the odds that the vaccines produced an antibody response run about one in four.

(268,702 posts)Colin Powell: Politics, Power & Prostate Cancer Survivor
Black men develop prostate cancer 60% more often than white men. In addition, they have a higher chance of dying from it. Because of this heightened risk, Black men are encouraged to start prostate cancer screening early with yearly PSA tests and physical exams at age 40, and even earlier if they have a strong family history of prostate cancer exists.
This is a lesson that retired four-star United States Army general, 65th United States Secretary of State, and former National Security Advisor, Commander of the U.S. Army Forces Command, Colin Powell, knew very well.
When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer at 66, Iwasnt terribly surprised or shocked, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Powell said. For the five years before that, I had been going for very regular checkups and my PSA was always high. It floated up and down. PSA alone doesnt indicate cancer, it just says something is going on.
Thankfully, Powell had the knowledge he needed to deal with this challenge, in addition to the understanding that cancer doesnt care about reputation. In fact, Powell had been tracking and preparing for the diagnosis for several years. He was so diligent about watching for potential issues with his prostate that he had already gone through two biopsies before the third turned up positive for cancer.

(30,978 posts)Now every vaccinated person who dies was definitely caused by COVID-19 nothing else according to the same people. I think their brains are made with some kind of viscous liquid that moves around with the political propaganda

(10,139 posts)So, he did have a comorbidity.
I see others have discovered his cancer history. Good. Just a reminder even if you are vaccinated, you can still be susceptible to the virus.

(13,909 posts)youre 11x likelier to die of COVID if youre unvaccinated. So yes, some vaccinated do die but its a very small percentage (plus, Powell had multiple myeloma cancer so he was immune-suppressed).
Farmer-Rick
(10,139 posts)Too bad they couldn't protect him from exposure to the virus thanks to the anti-vaxxers and anti-maskers.
I wonder if he had lived in New Zealand or another country that actually tried to stop the spread of the virus, if he would have lived longer?

(14,637 posts)He had other health issues that made it imperative for the rest of us to do what we could to stop the spread. Too many people dropped the ball (or intentionally threw it down). The more people vaccinated, the less likely that others who wont do well will catch Covid.
Its a simple concept, but consider who were talking about.

Pretending the LA Statistics were predictive, rahter than a snapshot of a time of low infection, high mitigation, and low delta proportion.
It is harder for anedcotes to hijack our minds when we have't used data inappropriately to make ourselves feel invincible.

(82,849 posts)I've decided just not to engage the anti-vaxx nitwits. They stopped listening and processing new information when they found a square on the game board they're comfortable with. It's a foolish and possibly lethal gamble they're taking and it's wholly unnecessary.
