Shouldn't cooking kill the bacteria? I know not to eat them raw but cooked onions should be okay, right?

That's probably the first best question.

Cooking definitely CAN work, but you'd want it to be thorough, and pretty high heat.

Throwing them in water you're boiling for a good 20 minutes should be 100% good.

Short of that, it might be a better idea to toss in most cases IMHO.

Oh wait, I grew them myself.

Glad that they were able to track down the source. It’s not always easy for them to do.
