Workers keep quitting at sky-high rates -- and that's driving up wages

Small-business owners hoping for relief from high turnover and sky-high quit rates will have to wait at least another month for good news — and deal with rapidly rising wages in some industries – according to new data from payroll provider Gusto.

In August, about 4.3 million workers quit their jobs in the United States, or about 2.9% of the workforce, the highest since the Bureau of Labor Statistics began tracking that data regularly. But Gusto’s own data showed those high quit rates continued into September, with about 4.4% of workers quitting their jobs, down just slightly from the record high.

“The high quit rates show the labor market is going through a long-term realignment and workers are re-evaluating what jobs they want to take.,” said Gusto Economist Luke Pardue.

A lot of that realignment is being driven by women leaving the workforce amid the rise of the Delta variant, which pushed many women out of the workforce, since the brunt of childcare often falls on them, Pardue said.
