My dictionary says liberalism is "a political and social philosophy that promotes individual rights, civil liberties, democracy and free enterprise." Economic policies are seen as a means to the end of achieving those benefits for the people.

I've heard some people say we should call ourselves "progressives" but that has problems as well. Progressives at the turn of the last century heralded eugenics and prohibition among other causes
We are leftists. We fall to the left of the spectrum and there's nothing wrong with that
