I'd wager a gator ate Laundrie

...dragged him underwater. Wicked karma.

FBI Investigator Michael McPherson said the area where the items were found was previously underwater. North Port Police Department spokesman Josh Taylor said the remains found at the wilderness park were bones and not flesh.

Dr. Cyril Wecht said the Medical Examiner would examine the bones, teeth, and insects to find answers most critical to the case – the identity of the body, how long it has been there, and the cause of death.

Although the body likely had been submerged for an extended period of time, Wecht said experts should have no problems coming to conclusions.

“If he shot himself, that will still be evident,” Wecht said. “It would not have been obliterated or changed to any significant degree by virtue of submersion. If he stabbed himself, that could be obliterated or markedly obscured by virtue of the post-mortem period and submersion in water.”

... as much as they can. With DNA tests of the other remains too.

This is an over-the-top idea that's almost certainly not true in this case, but someone COULD pull their teeth to appear that they're dead.

If those are his bones, though, then he's dead, dead, dead.

... then it's settled as far as I'm concerned. (DNA testing should still be done anyway, but it probably isn't necessary.)

I still haven't found an article that describes how the teeth were found, though.

Edit: I'd read that his family arrived on that scene before the investigators, so that made me wonder about possible shenanigans.

Made me wonder if they tossed out a couple teeth that he'd previously pulled. Strongly doubt it, but investigators should be certain that he's dead.

If nothing else, his family seemed to know exactly where he was located. If they had previously withheld that information at all, then they're culpable for delaying the investigation.

Or maybe they shared that information, but flooding prevented an earlier discovery somehow?

turned out to be a staged accident was not who they said he was.
The case was about an army man who killed someone and was then supposedly killed in this accident. He did get caught and was charged again for a second killing.

... as trustworthy during this whole sordid affair either.

My parents would've demanded to know where my girlfriend was at, and why I drove her vehicle back home. They'd probably pull the lever to electrocute me in an electric chair if they thought I had committed murder.

I got into some (pretty minor) trouble with some friends when I was a teenager, and my parents were the only ones who showed up at the police station and said, "Put him in jail!" One of the cops' eyes bulged like he was thinking, "Daaamn."

I was on the honor roll at school at that time, and it's not like I was regularly in trouble.

I admitted that I got caught up in the "excitement" and I wouldn't do it again, and they didn't remain furious at me.

I think they were gobsmacked from getting called to the police station, and they were still angry when they first showed up.

The more people involved, the riskier the scheme.

I strongly suspect that he's actually dead, of course. DNA testing should confirm it.

Now, if you stumble into (or onto) a gator’s space then yes, there’s a possibility it might attack you.

Or if you get too close to a mama’s nest.

But gators don’t prey on grown humans or jump out of the water to snatch them.

Go to a place like Shark Valley in Everglades National Park and you’ll see full grown gators sitting literally two feet off the walking path. Hundreds of people will walk by it in a given day. Not once have any just jumped out and snatched a person.

Maybe an Australian saltie but not gators over here.

If gators did get to him most likely it was post-mortem.
