(8,925 posts)Because the McAulliffe campaign treated it as a genuine demonstration, and the Right immediately glommed onto the fact it was staged.
So now the question is, was this always a, "We were making a point!" thing. Or is it a, "Shit, we got found out, let's make something up!" scenario?
Because the fact they did not share with the McAulliffe people it wasn't real was certainly . . . a choice. Even their own social media person was treating it as 100% white supremacists.
What a unnecessarily damaging stunt.
Does anyone reasonably think people are going to see what just happened with this and go, "Oh, but that reminds me of Charlottesville!"
Or are they seeing dishonest campaign stunt the weekend before the election?
Guess which part of it the media discusses all weekend?

The Lincoln Project acknowledged they were behind the stunt after VICE News identified one of the people dressed in the photo in front of Youngkins campaign bus as a low-level Democratic operative who has recently been working for Democratic sting operator Lauren Windsors The Undercurrent. Her group has repeatedly gone undercover as conservative activists to goad politicians into saying whats really on their mindand has also held events alongside the Lincoln Project in recent days.

I agree, dumb. And harmful.

(8,925 posts)It sounds like they wanted people to think it was real.
Did the Right really need ammo for calling everything a false flag?
Because they just got an artillery shell.

(2,149 posts)Just look at James O'Keefe for starters.
And Charlottesville was real.
The right can shove their fake outrage.
Caliman73
(11,690 posts)Yes, the right can shove the fake outrage but guess what? The "liberal" media is also going to talk about the "dishonest" attacks from the Democratic side trying to sling mud. No one on this side gives a fuck about what right wingers think or feel, but we have to care what the rest of the people, who are JUST NOW starting to pay attention, and will see Democrats trying to smear Republicans, because that is how the "liberal" media will frame it.

(2,488 posts)Women dressed as handmaidens created a certain image that stuck with people, TLP just said in their imagery 'This is what you are and what you support '.
This stunt is having the exact effect it was supposed to. Making people talk about it...making the media talk about it and now with their announcement, they own the news cycle.
Some here and elsewhere seem to miss the message TLP just made or they are using their hatred of TLP to ignore it. I wonder why this is.
For me...More of this and ratchet it up even more. We Democrats need to play hardball as well.

(13,469 posts)all this will do is make people stick their fingers in their ears at the next white supremacist rally and say: It's not real. They're staged.

(2,488 posts)That's what we need....ordinary people and the media looking at these events under a microscope.
White supremacists and fascists don't like the spot light on them. Especially politicians.

(89,172 posts)but I think the voters on both sides are a bit different. Things that appeal to right wingers don't necessarily appeal to more liberal and moderate types .
This is why people who are always demanding democrats behave like Republicans make no sense .

(8,039 posts)played a run of the mill Republicans dirty trick on a to far right for them Republican that they might want to lose with out bothering to give a heads up to the Democratic candidate because either way it is a win/win for this set of Republicans. Never trust a conservative, even if they appear to be playing on your side. They are always out for themselves.

(267 posts)They're all longtime GOP operatives. What they are doing to Youngkin has been done to many, many Democrat's over the years the trick here is if the stunt gets exposed you still get exposure for your point of view and at the same time low attention voters will only remember the first burst of attention that the stunt draws.

I have found the 'low attention voters' now mostly fall into the third way, tRump cultist, and the 'both sides are the same' groups.
They are mostly lost causes at this point.
