Biden Administration Reportedly Considering $450,000 Payments To Families Separated At Southern Border
Anna Kaplan
Forbes Staff

The Biden administration is reportedly considering making payments of approximately $450,000 to each person separated from their family at the southern border, the Wall Street Journal reports, showing signs of a potential settlement for several lawsuits that claim the U.S. government’s policies left them with lasting psychological effects.

The U.S. Departments of Justice, Homeland Security and Health and Human Services are in talks to offer each person who had been separated $450,000, the Journal reports, citing multiple sources close to the discussions.

The offer comes to nearly $1 million per family, as most families who crossed the border included one parent and one child, though the Journal reports the official number could change.

It is unclear how many people will be eligible for the settlement, but about 940 families have reportedly filed claims.

I will vote for a Republican but I certainly don't agree with it myself. That would be like making them a
lottery winner in Mexico. What would $450000 be equivalent to in Mexico? In this country it would put you in
the top 10% at least. I think separating them from their families was wrong. But they were not invited
here, they put themselves and their family at risk themselves. This will only encourage more
problems at the border.

We've paid reparations to Japanese Americans who were rounded up and put in concentration camps. Reparations are cleansing, helping to wipe away an evil stain on the national conscience.
It is the price we have to pay for allowing an avowed racist to take power and brutalized a helpless people.
We will be paying the price for Trump for years to come.

They should pay for mental health counseling if any of the abducted children need it. That should be the extent of it.

$450,000 to illegal migrants (I heard it could be $900,000 per family in another article in the WSJ) is a disaster for us politically. It will hand elections in 2022 and 2024 over to the republicans.

So many people in this country are hurting right now. Grocery, gas and heating prices are soaring.

Many young people ages 20-35 are being crushed by student debt, and are facing the reality that with housing costs soaring, they cannot afford to buy a house. Some wish to start families, but cannot afford that either because of the cost of childcare+student debt+housing. $900,000 would buy a house in nearly any city in the country.

How do we think this will play with that demographic when illegal migrants receive $900,000, while the current administration has made no headway on issues that matter to them? Yikes.

Prescription medication prices are out of control. People are having to skip insulin doses. I know I have to pay over $600 per month for one medication when insurance won't cover it. Seniors on social security are expected to scrape by on $1500 per month. They're being told they aren't going to get dental or hearing aid coverage. Disabled people are expected to survive on $770 per month.

How do you think all those voters will react to hearing they have to skip their insulin doses, and survive on $770 per month, but Biden wants to give illegal migrants $900,000?

Someone upthread mentioned reparations. How do we think this will play with Black voters who keep getting told "there's no support for reparations for you" but hey, here's $900,000 per family for illegal migrants? Black voters saved Biden in the primaries and the general.

This is a disaster for us politically.

So $450k to illegal immigrants and 99% of Americans fall under IRS scrutiny.

BRILLIANT.

Doesn't matter if these things never become law, they will be featured in '22 campaign ads.

This will be spun by Republicans at the top of their lungs as “Biden giving illegals money”. I think the families should be compensated, but let’s not take the blame in place of Trump.
