Man dies in Spain after being gored during bull run

Madrid – A 55-year-old Spanish man bled to death after being gored in the leg by a bull during a festival in which the animals are released into the streets, local authorities said Sunday.

The town hall of Onda, in the eastern Spanish province of Castellon, said in a statement that it would suspend Sunday’s last day of bull-running following the goring on Saturday afternoon during the annual festival.

The local Levante news site said that the man was taken to a nearby hospital, but doctors couldn’t save him.

It is the first known death during a running-of-the-bulls since the festivals returned to many towns across Spain after a pandemic-imposed pause. Despite the occasional casualties and growing opposition from animal rights groups, racing bulls or cows remains a popular tradition. Two other people were injured during a similar bull-run in another town, Levante reported. ................(more)

4. A friend's cousin died in Pamplona back in the 1995.

We were young at the time, but when her cousin was killed there, it was a big local story. Her family was devastated. He had just graduated college.

So needless.

6. So why did they cancel Sunday's bull-run? . . .

They knew when they scheduled the event such a death could occur. Why be so distraught now, when the blood is on their hands, and not taken the wiser course when they had the opportunity?

If this is as it is in Pamplona, a prelude to the ritualistic killing of the beasts in the ring, why deny the bulls the opportunity to take out some of their tormenters, or at least those who willfully -- gleefully watch and cheer.

7. A few years ago I was in Pamplona (not for bull fights) and had the impression it was a wild place

where crazy men go to run with the bulls to the pen (and their certain death). But I found the people there to be very "old school." Very properly dressed and very formal with their demeanor. Not what I expected. It has a beautiful town square.
