(6,699 posts)....but then I don't know Jersey politics at all.
I do know McAuliffe slit his own throat with so many dumb moves.....giving the gop a lift and win in a state that went Biden +10.
In my opinion, he was a warm over "Clintonite", and had as much charisma as wet toast. Congress fucking around with Biden's signature infrastructure bills made more fodder for youngkin.
Get the bills passed. Make it clear...WE CAN DO SO MUCH MORE AND BIGGER with Democratic majorities in Congress. Our hands are tied behind our backs with sinema and manchin...BUT THEY GIVE US THE RAZOR THIN MAJORITY WE NEED.
Get done what we can...NOW! And come back for more in 2022 when we can have two Senators vote against us. This is our chance. The cult and gQp are licking their chops.

First time since 1985 that NJ elected a governor from the same party as the sitting President. And the first time a Dem governor won re-election since 1977.

(1,347 posts)I'm sure this won't matter though. Only VA will matter out there in the media-sphere. Murphy didn't "win right" or something.

(8,962 posts)NJ broke a long-standing precedent in re-electing Murphy. Virginia maintained its off-year precedent of alternating between D and R. Dems did manage two consecutive terms there, and with a stronger less gaffe-prone candidate it could have been three in a row.

(7,510 posts)The polling that showed Youngkin up by 2% was accurate.
The NJ polls were not.

(8,962 posts)As are the margins of error in their sampling. The relative success (or otherwise) of GOTV and how undecided's split often tell a different story when evaluating the final results. Still one wonders, in the current political climate, how Gavin Newsum actually over-performed polling expectations in California, even beyond his initial margin of victory. The strength or weakness of candidates still seems to matter.

(938 posts)that theyre just not reaching young people. Its just kind of assumed that Millennials and Zoomers are progressive as a cohort, but I think a not inconsiderable number of them have been red-pilled by things like Gamer Gate and the Incel movement (as it were). Irony-poisoned dead-enders who skew anarchist or fascist, every sign of progressivism or inclusion seen as a direct attack on the privileges their white cis parents enjoyed, privileges they want to safeguard for themselves.
I think the one thing I can say for my generation and the younger generation is that the income insecurity that has plagued us since the Bush era has radicalized a lot of us toward the extreme wings of the political spectrum. Do with that what you will.

(4,587 posts)There were a ton of Jack signs Murphy signs were rare. The anti-maskers were very motivated. And then there is the property tax issue. Murphy made a dumb remark and Jack made the most of it

(29,148 posts)I wasn't particularly worried, but it still shouldn't have been this close. I think a lot of voters just took it for granted that Murphy would win. Turnout where I am (Hudson County) certainly seemed low at all the polling places I went by, but then the actual returns didn't actually look down from 2017, so maybe a lot of people just voted by mail.

(43,025 posts)Democrats in NJ moved left with some progressive ideas, and Murphy really altered the budget and fiscal problems from what little I heard.

(8,670 posts)From biting bullets in elections. With 70 percent of us not trumpers, this is ridiculous. Fuck you media. You are No more than a Wet Fox version of propaganda. (News ???) Watered down more than a whisky at a red neck rebel bar next to an airport at 20 minute before closing at 2:00 AM.
Thanks for the Murphy news. We are very close to the states needed to rewrite the constitution. These Governors are critical. With the GQP Terrorist, we will soon not be biting bullets, we will be catching them all over our bodies.

Phil has 'got this' - but lets not take our eyes off the prize just yet. Essex county is critical - and we begin curing ballots this afternoon through Saturday.
We may not know until Saturday.
