and their borders should be closed.
Though it is probably too late. It is highly likely the virus is already in the USA and at this point just circulating in the background among the millions of anti-vaxxers. if everyone got vaxxed and we had the virus under control, it would be much easier to ID, contact trace, and isolate these outbreaks, but our numbers are just too large to make that realistic.
hopefully samples of this damn thing at already in the hands of vaccine producers and they figure out ASAP how to adapt to it. we can't stop the anti-vaxxers from spreading it everywhere. all we can do is hope to save ourselves.

(28,098 posts)Were the PCR tests all routine surveillance or symptomatic or some mix of each? Are we sure no visiting happened between the two, and how? Thats just the start of my questions.

(25,493 posts)I decided that a few weeks ago. I am vaxxed, will be boosted in a week, and we are very careful and wear masks at work, etc. However, like you, I've stopped doom scrolling. It's just too much for almost two straight years.

(4,266 posts)Not saying the new bug isn't nasty but this example isn't inherently worse than what has already happened with Delta.

(21,722 posts)We'll never be free of this pandemic if people keep thinking they're smarter than the epidemiologists. Lack of concern is a dead giveaway, pun intended, that person is an idiot, a psychopath or an antivaxer, but I repeat myself.
Thankfully, the ignore function has no limits. I just don't need the agitation.

(195,159 posts)Putting everyone else in danger, family, friends, coworkers, neighbors, anyone they cross paths with. When I brought my car in for an oil change last week, I chatted in the waiting room with a lady who would fit in well here. She works at a local school and is absolutely livid since her granddaughter's 5th grade has been quarantined - sent home - twice this year because of a Covid outbreak in the school. She figures it has to be a teacher who has contact with all the kids in that grade since the entire 5th grade was sent home. And, as we know, kids of that age were just recently approved to get the vaccine. And the little girl got it, as did her brother and her Dad - who was very sick - only the Mom escaped it. And those who work in schools absolutely have to be vaccinated and masked since they're regularly in close proximity with a lot of kids. I've seen the kids in my school district getting off the buses nd they're all masked, have since last year so they're used to it.

DU has helped me through so much. I depend on my friends here and they've never let me down. Hopefully, we will come out on the other side better for it all.

(3,065 posts)The two people don't ever have to have met, air does not have to be crossing the hallway. If the housekeeper went from one room the next they could easily have caused a large number of deposits to be transferred.
One reason I'm still not ready to go to any hotel.
The pillow would seem be a perfect vector for transmission between guests.

Flights from six countries will be banned as officials review travel measures after scientists voice concern over variant
Flights from southern Africa will be banned, with six countries placed under Englands red list travel restrictions, after scientists raised the alarm over what is feared to be the worst Covid-19 variant yet identified.
Whitehall sources said the B.1.1.529 variant, which is feared to be more transmissible and has the potential to evade immunity, posed a potentially significant threat to the vaccine programme which we have to protect at all costs.

South Africa to be put on Englands travel red list over new Covid variant

In the past 48 hours, South African scientists reviewed PCR test data from the Gauteng region and discovered the variant appeared to be behind the increase in cases, having risen to account for about 90% of cases in a matter of weeks. At a national level, South Africas daily number of infections hit 1,200 on Wednesday, up from 106 earlier in the month.
Speaking at a hastily called news conference on Thursday, the virologist Tulio de Oliveira said: We can see very early signs that this lineage has rapidly increased in prevalence in Gauteng and may already be present in most provinces.

Possibly both, but it wasn't clear. In Hong Kong if you test positive you're hospitalized, so there's no reason to light our hair on fire over that bit. Both cases were double vaxxed 6 months ago, so boosters may have prevented infections. We don't know yet.
