Omicron extremely mild no hospitalizations
https://qz.com/2095354/what-are-the-symptoms-of-the-omicron-variant/amp/
The South African doctor who first identified the omicron variant that is spreading in the country and abroad has described the symptoms as she observed them in her patients, stating that the strain is so far producing “very, very mild” effects in them. Dr Angelique Coetzee told BBC News that she had first noticed the symptoms in a young, male patient around the age of 30 whom she normally knew to be very healthy. He was “extremely tired” as well as having “body aches and pains with a bit of a headache,” a “scratchy” rather than sore throat, and no cough or loss of taste or smell, she said. The doctor was speaking about her experience of a small group of patients, and not making general comments about how all patients will experience it. What are the symptoms of the omicron variant? Coetzee tested the man for covid-19 and found him to be positive, then tested his family and found them all to have the virus, despite showing only “very, very mild symptoms,” she said. For the rest of the day, people kept presenting at her surgery with similar symptoms, and all tested positive. Noticing that the symptoms seemed to differ from the delta variant, which had hitherto been the most prevalent form of covid globally, she alerted the country’s vaccines committee, of which she is a member. They announced their resultant discovery of the omicron variant a few days later. Perhaps reassuringly for those who are worrying about this new development, Coetzee noted that none of the cases she knew of were serious. “What we are seeing clinically in South Africa, and remember that I’m at the epicenter, that’s where I’m practicing, is extremely mild…We haven’t admitted anyone [to hospital]. I spoke to other colleagues of mine: The same picture,” she told the BBC. However, she did caution that the picture might change in the next weeks.

5. Exactly what I was thinking
I don't wish for a virulent mutation but the fact that Omicron is giving impressions of being mild will have many on the right spewing about how the left is always blowing things out of proportion relating to Covid. But the more people downplay the virus and fail to get vaccinated, the more likely it is that a truly nasty strain is going to land on our doorsteps. They just don't get that concept!

While on the one hand I think this will become our "new normal" and there's always gonna be a variant or two in play, That doesn't mean that ALL of them are gonna be "weaker".
And I know of a couple anti-vaxers who have the mindset of ..."See? It's not as bad as you say!" That mentality is dangerous IMO |

as the cluster at a university in Praetoria led to an over-representation of young, healthy people who usually fare relatively well with covid.
https://www.who.int/news/item/28-11-2021-update-on-omicron ..."Severity of disease: It is not yet clear whether infection with Omicron causes more severe disease compared to infections with other variants, including Delta. Preliminary data suggests that there are increasing rates of hospitalization in South Africa, but this may be due to increasing overall numbers of people becoming infected, rather than a result of specific infection with Omicron. There is currently no information to suggest that symptoms associated with Omicron are different from those from other variants. Initial reported infections were among university students—younger individuals who tend to have more mild disease—but understanding the level of severity of the Omicron variant will take days to several weeks. All variants of COVID-19, including the Delta variant that is dominant worldwide, can cause severe disease or death, in particular for the most vulnerable people, and thus prevention is always key. More infectious and less virulent is the usual evolutionary path for a virus.
Rather similar to the timeline of the 1918 flu virus if so. 🤞 |

13. Until most of the world is immunized there will be new "variants of concern."
Omicron isn't the last by any means.
However, the usual life course of a virus is to become less lethal. Presumably that's what happened to the "common cold" viruses, perhaps starting out killing their hosts but achieving viral superstar success as permanent, endemic nuisances. I'm wondering if Omicron is following that pattern. It's taking over from other SARS-CoV-2 mutations where it's spreading, and it may well be less lethal. ?? |

16. That's exactly what happened with influenza.
It got more lethal, then it got less lethal, and eventually became an every day virus that we have to deal with. We never have and probably never will eradicate the flu. And we will most likely never get rid of COVID. But it will just keep becoming less lethal. We're all going to get it at some point, but I'd much rather have a mild cough than two weeks in the ICU or die.

17. Yes. Interestingly, I was surprised to learn that only a fraction
those who die from "the flu" are actually killed by the flu viruses themselves, but rather from other causes it opens the door to, the pneumonia virus #1. Deaths attributable to flu virus alone are so low and misleading about the actual danger that experts calculate an algorhythm or multiplier from various factors to estimate how many are really expected to die from the next flu epidemic. The things you learn these days.

JOHANNESBURG—The emergence of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus in South Africa has driven a sharp increase in Covid-19 hospitalizations in the country’s hot-spot province over the past two weeks, although fewer patients are being treated for severe disease than in previous surges, the country’s National Institute for Communicable Diseases said.

29. Omicron has shown up in the UK, Netherlands,
Italy, Portugal, Israel, and Canada.
Maybe more countries by now. So far, Portugal is reporting that cases have been mild and even asymptomatic. The lack of symptoms could account for its quick spread. If people don't know that they are infected, they are going about as usual, infecting people they come in contact with. That makes a good case for wearing masks. We are lucky if it turns out to be mild. But there will still be some people with health conditions that make even a mild case dangerous for them. I think that I will be seeing the omicron variant in my region very soon. The Canadian cases are in Ontario, which borders on NY state. One location is Ottowa, which is not as near to NYers. But the other location is Hamilton, which is across Lake Erie from northwestern PA and western NY. With the borders open now, people are crossing into and out of NY daily. Many NYers own camping and other properties in Ontario and vice versa. Others have jobs across the border. Niagara Falls brings people from around the world. It won't be long before western NY has omicron cases. Probably the same is true for NYC as an international port. |

64. You keep using that term "clout chasing" and calling out posters with it
This is the third time I've counted. Its an urban slang thing or something?
Can you explain what it means with respects to COVID and posting about it on an anonymous news forum? When one catches clout, what exactly do they do with it? |
