Romney torpedoed his own campaign tonight
Romney's strategy tonight was obvious. In order to defeat a candidate, one must differentiate himself from his opponent. Former Vice President Al Gore has repeatedly warned Democrats if we want to win elections again, we must demonstrate clearly the differences between ourselves and our opponents on issues and policies.
Barack Obama's strongest credentials are his foreign policy accomplishments. Knowing that he could never best his opponent in a clear debate on foreign affairs, Romney chose to come out tonight attempting to take that advantage from President Obama by obfuscating policy and issue distinctions between the two of them. He simply agreed with him as often as possible, leaving little space for the President to take a swing. The President astutely turned those opportunities into chances to draw distinctions between Romney's positions du jour and those of yesterdays gone by. In executing this strategy, Romney appeared not to be the statesman he hoped to project to the viewing audience. He appeared simply tranquilized, at times even stupefied. Tangled up in the ropes? This was once again a different Mitt Romney from the prevaricator in the first debate or the bully in the second debate. In the arena of performance art, he projected the new, improved Mitt Romney who had an astoundingly similar position to Barack Obama on a number of foreign affairs issues. Al Sharpton stood out brightly tonight in describing Romney's retreats as clinching, as in a boxing scenario. Excellent word to describe Romney's antics. Kudos to the Reverend Al for his excellent call on this fight. How did I see Romney's performance? Massive epic fail. He torpedoed his own chances to win this debate, and in the process probably sank his entire campaign. Comments? Sam

14. It is odd that you should say that
I really, really did not want to watch this third one but made myself. I studied his posture from the beginning and after a while I was wondering if he had taken tranquilizers. After this continued for some time, it appeared slowly to be a whole new strategy. Once he started agreeing so often with President Obama, for some reason I just remembered Al Gore lecturing Dems on how to defeat Republicans. Thinking in terms of simply strategy, it seemed clear when I thought he's trying to rob Obama of his dominating qualities, those successes in foreign affairs. From then on out, it all seemed crystalized. Just another performance art with a different role to play. The only thing missing was Hail to the Chief being played in the background.

4. I noticed and yelled at my tv
He would say, Obama's plan he just laid out is wrong. Now here is what I would do, then he parroted Obama's policy. It was comical especially where Obama called him on that and he tried to deny it. Even Bob Sheiffer(sp?) seemed amused by it. I think a lot of people are going to pick up on that, if not we should make them aware that is exactly what Romney did.

And your use of the word "parroted" is spectacular. He "parroted Obama's policy." Geez, I wish I had used that in my thread!

But you are correct, if Romney wins it will be in an unorthodox manner, to put it politely.

11. Romney looked as listless and unengaged as Obama looked in the first debate
yet I doubt the media will describe it as one-sided as they have the first debate.

I wouldn't trust nervous, blathering Romney to lead a Boy Scout troop.

22. I totally agree with you
I was watching President Obama campaigning today in Florida and Ohio. The crowds were wonderful, and the President was pumped.
I really admire the way he throws a punch when on the campaign trail. It just not one of those crass, dirty things, but a good-natured dig. He does it with such a delicate hand instead of a slap across the face. It is a classy way to criticize one's opponent without getting down and rolling in the mud. His interactions with his crowds, as I am sure you know, is also uplifting to watch. I could not help but feel privileged to watch him in action and ruefully think this: once this man leaves office (in four more years), I do not expect to see anyone of his caliber climb to the same heights on the campaign trail. And I think I will always miss it. The best I can hope for is that his oldest daughter decides to follow in her father's footsteps, and one day an older Barack Obama hits the campaign trail for her! Now wouldn't that be wonderful! Sam |

23. President Obama is a professional and I'm sure his daughters will succeed.
It would be very cool if one or both of them ended up in the White House again one day in the future.
