(12,310 posts)from disease. I think one of the stories even features Moses. The implication being, they weren't white to begin with. Turning white was a sign of leprosy and disease.
I don't feel like looking them up but I remember being shown the passages several decades ago.
Not saying it's true that there are no white people in the bible, but I think people would be shocked to know most of their biblical heroes, Jesus being one of them, were not white.

I doubt that Hitler made any white, non-white distinctions. But then I haven't read Mein Kampf.

Even "white" people come in many skin shades, hair colors, and eye colors, from Italian and French to Dutch and Scandinavian, as well as some people in Iran and Afghanistan. And many European tribes entered Europe from western Asian steppes. Are they Asian or European?
The eastern Mediterranean region, or Middle East, was a crossroads in Biblical times between Europeans, Semitic people (Canaan, Israel, Egypt, Babylonia, Arabia, and numerous tribes), Ethiopia (Nubia), Indo-European speaking Hittites, Hurrians, and ancient Persians, to name just a few. Language does not mean the same as ethnicity or "race," though. Consider the number of Native Americans, African Americans, and Asian Americans who speak the Indo-European English language. And yet, terms like Caucasian, Indo-European, white, and European are often used interchangeably.
So the OP use of "white" is meaningless. All of those people intermixed genetically, by choice in marriage, or by being captives of one another in the numerous wars of the region.
Greeks and Romans are mentioned often in the Bible. Would they be considered "white" compared to lighter complected Persians and Arabs? Paul preached to Jewish settlements in Greece and Rome, where some Jews had lived since the earliest days of the Roman Republic and even before. During the period of Greek and then Roman rule over Judea, there were many partially assimilated Jews among Greeks and Romans, including Paul himself who was a Roman citizen. They intermarried.
It is true that most people of the Bible did not look like the stereotypical blue-eyed blond "white" person. Certainly Jesus did not look anything like the light brown haired, blue eyed man usually depicted in portraits. He probably had very dark brown wavy or curly hair, brown eyes, and an olive skin color.

(14,118 posts)individuals find themselves in. I have a website that shows how black, brown and
white-skinned folk all evolved in Africa then went on out into the world. If someone asked
me nicely I might provide links for this. Butcha know the Caucasians and Aryans? They
were located in Central Asia long before there were Northern Europeans. White folk
around in the middle east? You betcha!

I'm related to a few on Gedmatch.
The Central Asian Turks had kids with people who were native to Anatolia etc etc etc etc and the Central Asian became a small part of their genetics. It is really only a small part of their DNA.
I have no Central Asian DNA.

Or mainly because albinism does have enough medical issues that would have made it hard to be a rough and tumble leader back then...

(7,884 posts)in our hemisphere I rather doubt he'd qualify. Such distinctions as the "White Man's Burden" were primarily out of the British Empire and did not generally exist in the Roman Empire (BC or AD) as the same terms nor distinctions.
Racism is a relatively modern construct derived as it were from the need to elevate those who "owned" above disgrace and discussion for having treated other men so badly. The mythology generated about "inferior races" developed as a social protection for those men so deeply involved in the slave trade that buildings and streets in such places as Liverpool still reflect how powerful they were and how many lives they affected, and how close they once stood to the British Crown and Empire. It took root in American culture as well, as we have seen and heard all too often.
I find it absurd to say the least to consider that Pilate would be considered "white" in his own era or during the 600 or so years which passed between then and the written version of those events. Such a term may have been applied by those interpreting scripture during subsequent translation but I doubt it would be used in the same context as we apply it now.

(7,510 posts)A major Christian justification for the use of slavery, especially against those with dark skin, was the Curse of Ham. The Curse of Ham refers to a biblical parable (Gen. 9:2027) in which Ham, the son of Noah, sins by seeing his father inebriated and naked, although scholars differ on the exact nature of Hams transgression. Noah then curses Hams offspring, Canaan, with being a "servant of servants unto his brethren". Although race or skin color is not mentioned, many Jewish, Christian and Muslim scholars began to interpret the passage as a curse of both slavery and black skin, in an attempt to justify the enslavement of people of color, specifically those of African descent.[182] In the medieval period, however, it was also used by some Christians as a justification for serfdom. Muslim sources in the 7th century allude to the Curse of Ham gaining relevance as a justifying myth for the Islamic worlds longstanding enslavement of Africans.

(25,236 posts)It was a violation of one of the 10 commandments. (Though shalt not make graven images)
It is also forbidden in Islam. (Remember when someone created a firestorm when they drew Mohammad?? It is against the Moslem faith to even describe what Mohammad looked like)

That is why you do not read descriptions of how people looked. The only ones that I know of are: Goliath was tall...And Samson had a bunch of hair.
However, the Greeks and Romans were into drawing people early on.
This is a Roman fresco from 40 AD
Roman fresco from 4th Century BC
There are no Jewish murals or frescos from this time period.

I still question the strategy of "You're an idiot, now vote for us."

(288 posts)So, let me understand this - a Christmas tree, popularized by the German family brought over to England to become the monarchy, is not just a symbol of Christmas, but is somehow also about Hanukkah - the winter festival of Judaism to commemorate the victory over the Greek Syrians who tried to ban Judaism in their empire. So we Jews have it all wrong, we should stop with the lighting of candles in the hanukkiah (a menorah used for Hanukkah). Or perhaps we should burn a Christmas tree on each night of Hanukkah ( in case anyone thinks that I am serious). Oh oh, I know, we should burn candles shaped like Christmas trees in the hanukkiah. [More ]
Also Jews who have lighter skin are only technically white.

(25,236 posts)I just got to thinking about the ancient "graven images" thing...duh, then there are no descriptions of white or black or brown people in the bible..LOL
I think the only descriptions are: Goliath was tall and Samson had a bunch of hair.
But there could have been all these white, black and brown people in the Holy Land during Abraham, Moses, King David, Jesus etc.
Maybe it was even a cosmopolitan rainbow coalition...
We will never know due to the forbidden graven images.....
