Oh, there are people who believe it.

The way some of these sorts of CT's work is to attempt to focus attention on a false story, which is used as a foil for the real one.

For example, George W. Bush shirked his Air National Guard duty in order to work on a political campaign of a family friend. The actual narrative of strings being pulled to get him into the Guard without having to actually do anything would have been harmful to W's presidential aspirations.

So, that is why someone concocted a FAKE memo on the subject and baited CBS News with it - the intent, which was successful, was to then debunk the memo so that the story of CBS News running with the fake memo eclipsed the underlying truth of what W was up to in the Air National Guard.

Unfortunately, there are people who take the attitude that its okay to make any accusation against one's enemies, without realizing that fake accusations can be promoted BY those very enemies.

There is no question that MTG was part of the Congressional cheerleading squad for the insurrection. The push to tag her as the DC pipe bomber, if it gains any traction, will be useful to obscure her actual role in the events leading up to that day.

Another monumental example of this sort of thing was that quite a few people gained quite a lot of attention on theories about 9/11 involving "no planes" and a catalog of nonsense, which distracted from the very real criminal negligence of the Bush administration and its misplaced law enforcement priorities.
