Capitol rioters' tears, remorse don't spare them from jail

WASHINGTON (AP) — Florida business owner Robert Palmer cheered on the violence at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 before he joined the fray. Screaming obscenities, he hurled a wooden plank and a fire extinguisher at police officers trying to ward off the mob.

Nearly a year later, Palmer fought back tears when he faced the federal judge who sentenced him to more than five years in prison. He said he was “horrified, absolutely devastated” by what he had done.

“I'm just so ashamed that I was a part of that,” Palmer told U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan on Dec. 17 before she gave him the longest prison term for any rioter so far.

Judges are hearing tearful expressions of remorse — and a litany of excuses — from rioters paying a price for joining the Jan. 6 insurrection, even as others try to play down the deadly attack on a seat of American democracy.

"Just following orders!"

"Trump made me do it!"

"Went along with the crowd."

"Seemed a good idea at the time."

But now, I'm astounded at what I did (and got caught for it). I'm sorry! (that I got caught and am facing jail time)

More than 5 years? Plenty of reflection time then, plenty of time to re-examine your internal dialog at the time.

But I guess, the 'Revolution' failing, and being tracked down to be held accountable and jailed never occurred to any of them.
TFG was going to get reinstated as POTUS, and they would be hailed heroes, Sons of the Revolution.
In a different time, and in a different place, some would now be facing a firing squad.

What went wrong for them is obvious.
TFG's greatest appeal was with those who had no moral compass of their own.

If they did nothing wrong, as many Trumpist TV personalities insist, there's no need for any remorse.

If they have remorse, obviously it is because they acknowledge they did something wrong.

For the coup failing.

I'm surprised words like 'sedition', 'traitors' and 'firing squad' aren't readily used in the courts.

Yeah, that's the thing that really struck me in the 2016 campaign when I was urging Republicans to pick any of the candidates other than Trump: they had no moral compass.

Leaders of the religious right went to Trump Tower and had their picture taken with Trump in front of his wall-sized picture of him on the cover of Playboy.

He admitted on tape that he sexually assaulted women.

There were stories in the press about how his black casino workers had to go hide in the back when Trump was on the floor because he didn't like to see them.

They had their pick of Cruz the evangelical or Rubio the Catholic and all these supposedly religious Republicans instead flocked to Trump who publicly said that he'd never asked God for forgiveness for anything...even after all those things broke in the press.

I was pretty sure at the time that Trump got the leadership of Liberty University, the First Baptist Church of Dallas, and several others in his pocket due to promising them money whether directly or indirectly. But money doesn't explain the rest of them.

Yeah, religious people with no moral compass.

Under one year are truly getting away with murder.

I hate to say it but most nut cases that would throw bricks through windows, or attack cops with poles, could do 6 months for 30 days or 60 days without a sweat.

Their lives on the regular outside aren't much different than prison may be except minus the drugs although the drugs in prison are probably better.

All of the tears and I'm sorry I'm sorry it's b*******. It's theater
