United Airlines Offers Pilots Triple Pay to Ease Omicron Flight Disruptions

United Airlines is offering its pilots triple pay to pick up trips for most of January to help ease a staffing shortage driven by the rapid spread of the omicron variant of Covid-19.

United, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways, SkyWest, Alaska Airlines and other carriers have cancelled more than 10,000 combined flights since Dec. 23, citing a combination of bad weather and a surge in sick calls from crews that tested positive for Covid.

The disruptions come during what airline executives forecast as the busiest days since the start of the pandemic.

On Friday, airlines canceled nearly 1,500 U.S. flights, according to flight-tracking site FlightAware. United canceled more than 200, about 11% o f its mainline schedule.

We are just now seeing the economic effects of the latest surge with a lot more to come. Up till now the economy has been chugging along, but make no mistake when you start shutting down transportation hubs the economy will suffer greatly and the cause is going to fall squarely on the anti-vax cretins. Unfortunately the accompanying significant loss of life will occur when the medical community also collapses, but as usual that social impact will continue to be dismissed. The only thing which has an effect on the right is when their wallets start to suffer.

The example I will give is the government shutdown a couple of years ago which while popular with wing nuts ended promptly after government employees closed La Garbage airport for 1 hour and the shutdown ended the same day.

When and if the economy tanks you will have the entire GOP sold on the idea of vaccine mandates easily convincing their half-wit followers it was their idea all along.

They’ll just push points like vaccine and mask mandates are ineffective and use the prevalence of COVID infection among fully vaxxed and masked aircrews as “evidence”.
