Note: This is NOT a sports thread.
Minnesotans love their Vikings. At least they do when the Vikings win, which they do from time to time. However, this week the state's loyal Vikings fans have something else to think about. Kirk Cousins, the team's vastly overpaid but sometimes OK quarterback, will miss tonight's game against the arch-rival Green Bay Packers. Why? Because he has COVID-19.
A breakthrough case? Nope. He refused to get vaccinated. He was on TV, explaining that he "has his freedoms." Some fans cheered his obstinacy, because they're really stupid. Dude caught the COVID, as you might expect. Now, he can't play, and boy, are Vikings fans pissed off. I mean, unless the hapless Vikings win tonight, which they won't with their alternative QB, and win their next game, they're out of the playoffs. Never mind that they always lose in the playoffs and have never won a Super Bowl. Their fans are righteously pissed off at Kirk Cousins for screwing up the season.
Over and over again, right-wing heroes fall victim to COVID-19. They get cheered when they refuse to take the vaccine, because really stupid. Then, when they get sick, the cheers stop, and the excuses start. But, do the fans of people like that run out and get their vaccines? Probably not. If they're stupid enough not to have already gotten them, they're stupid enough to find one more rationalization for not doing so, even when their local hero disappoints them.
And this is why the right-wingers fail, in the end. They have the power to deceive themselves about everything. They have deceived themselves into thinking January 6 was a "peaceful demonstration." They have deceived themselves into believing that the former President is a wonderful, powerful human being. They have deceived themselves into believing they are immortal, despite their heroes catching COVID-19, as you might expect vaccine-refusers to do.
So, Minnesota Vikings fans, your team will lose again tonight. You'll rationalize that away, too. You're used to them losing. But, they'll lose this time because their moronic QB, Kirk Cousins, refused to get vaccinated. Go get your vaccines, folks. You've fooled your dumbass selves long enough, doncha think?

(22 posts)Just a heads up, the Vikings have actually been to 4 Super Bowls(1970, 1974, 1975, and 1977)I get that sports was not the reason for the post, but if you're going to include statements of fact, they should be ACTUAL FACTS.

(2,403 posts)The Vikings have an NFL Championship. It was prior to the NFL AFL merger.

I didnt say they won the superbowl.
Mr. Evil
(2,747 posts)Yes, they won the NFL championship but, lost the Super Bowl to Kansas City. That was the last Super Bowl between the old AFL and the NFL before the merger beginning the subsequent 1970 season.

They haven't even been in, much less won, a super bowl since I was in high school, a long 45 years ago. Roughly 60% of America's population wasn't even born yet. Dear God, Francis, lighten the fuck up.

(17,091 posts)He's about to finish his fourth season with the team. The Vikes have made the playoffs once in that time and are on the verge of missing out again due to Cousins' selfish decision on vaccination.
So he has one year left on his contract at a guaranteed $35 million. Minnesota is about to decide on his future and a gaffe like this one doesn't bode well for him. Either way, he's laughing all the way to the bank, however.

(2,403 posts)Zimmer is an idiot coach. Cousins has actually played very well all year and it was an outside chance for them to make it even if healthy. The coach and his supposed defensive awesomeness (ranked in the mid 20s) have made some of the most boneheaded mistakes this year and employs an offensive strategy dating back to the 1980s. Cousins has put his team in place to win another 4 games with his defense, kicker, or running back fumbling it away.
The mighty Aaron Rodgers couldnt get this team to the playoffs. Neither would Brady given this coachs philosophy.

(20,626 posts)Super Bowl appearances (1970, 1974, 1975, 1977), losing each of them. Of course, Kirk Cousins, being born in 1988, had absolutely nothing to do with any of those trips to the "Big Game"!
EDIT: I apologize for the redundancy of my post on top of some of the replies in the last few minutes. Was in the middle of handling breakfast as I was trying to get my reply together. Totally agree with the sentiment of the OP; just wanted to clarify a tiny part of it.

(146,192 posts)players like Cousins get paid many tens of millions of dollars. It's pretty hard to give such people ultimata about vaccines, I guess. They might just refuse to play.
Oh, wait...or they might catch COVID-19 and be forced not to play. A crapshoot, I guess.

(64,419 posts)I don't get it.
I had a guy, 68 years old, tell me he would just rely on his immune system rather than "submit".
I reminded him that a vaccine isn't a drug, merely a message to his immune system on how to handle virus X.
He had nothing. His politics has completely blurred Hus capacity for rational thought.

(18,087 posts)Of course, they've forgiven Rodgers because he's winning. That's all that matters in professional sports.

(8,200 posts)Pete Rose bet on his own team to win and was suspended for life and all of his records negated. He broke the rules and paid dearly. What a difference between then and now.
ProfessorGAC
(64,419 posts)First, the rule Rose broke had been posted in clubhouses for 60 years. It is the "prime directive" of MLB.
The video rule broken would be an organizational violation with the quarterback having zero influence on it.
If you mean the stupid deflated football thing, that "cheating" has been scientifically debunked.
BTW: I'm from the Chicago market. I'm a Bears fan. I have no attachment to Brady or the Pats.
But, to compare breaking rule #1 to any minor, unproven violation is silly.
olegramps
(8,200 posts)When is cheating a minor violation? Especially when huge amounts of money are at stake. Since telling the staff to deflate the footballs in secret is not listed in the locker room then it is not a wrong? Sorry, but having played in competitive sports, I strongly condemn any attempt to cheat without exception. I have never played professional golf, however it known for it is an exemplar example to avoid any wrong-doing. It is considered it should be totally dishonorable to cheat.
We will just have to disagree. You have a right to your opinion.

(8,576 posts)They have broken my Cowboy heart too many times. But, I highly respected Rogers as an athlete. A great one. Loved to watch his magic. But his careless selfish vaccine stance and lies, that pissed me off. No respect, hate the damn commercials. No concern for his team mates. He and Cousins, plus others in sports like Kyrie and more, are selfish and just being stupid. Would they be willing to risk polio ending any dream of sports? As for tonights game, fuck em both, hope its a zero zero tie. Actually need the Pack to lose so Cowboys can work into number one seed. Go Vikes. Fuck you Cousins. So, I will pull for the Packers, I have a magical way of jinxing teams I pull for, ie Cowboys for the last 20+ years. Did OK prior to that 20, then a billionaire trump fan bought em.
Sorry to all you non sports fans. Football turned my life around and helped me do very well in life after. Love the game. Glory days

(1,999 posts)Many people test positive but never develop symptoms. As such, they are much less likely to spread the disease, and some of the tests (PCR) can be so sensitive that they report back as positive when they've only detected non-viable fragments of the virus or of a related flu virus. It'd be interesting to know if Cousins, and the many other NFL players now testing positive, actually develop any symptoms. And whether those symptoms are mild, moderate or severe.
This conflating of "cases" with positive test results is skewing the conversation, esp. in the era of omicron. This issue is addressed in an article in today's Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/jan/01/us-covid-case-counts-omicron|

(16,296 posts)He started off with a bang, then over the years gave an on-and-off performance. At the end, when he was traded to Minnesota, the fans and the team was looking for a replacement with some relief. I believe he ended up with the Skins with a dismal QB rating.
In other words, when he's on the field, you don't really know what to expect. I think he's a team's desperation QB - hoping for the best.
