Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff warned Sunday that economic sanctions may be the strongest deterrent against a "very likely" Russian invasion of Ukraine.
"I think it would require enormous sanctions on Russia to deter what appears to be a very likely Russian invasion of Ukraine again," Schiff told Margaret Brennan of CBS News. "I think our allies need to be solidly on board with it. Russia needs to understand that we are united in this."
Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke with President Joe Biden last week, warning Biden that US sanctions "could lead to a complete breakdown in ties between our countries."
Biden has urged Putin to ease tensions with Ukraine, promising that the United States will respond if there is an invasion.

I hope somebody has made it clear to Putin that the whole world knows there is only one demonstrated aggressor/land grabber in this standoff: HIM. See: Crimea. Everybody else is just doing their best to defend themselves from HIM. Nobody has any intention of annexing any part of Russia.
It doesn't matter how far he wants his "sphere of influence" to reach. Ukrainians will decide what is best for Ukraine. If that involves the help of NATO in its national defense then so be it.

(3,647 posts)Do you know what Germany's justification is? I know they want to "de-nuclearize" but depending on natural gas isn't a green solution. And Russia controls the pipeline. Do they just want to be subject to Russia's whims of the moment?

(6,485 posts)You mean, if we don't let him invade Ukraine a second time, he will pout in the corner? The very first thing that will happen is his ambassadors will get kicked out of every NATO country. Does he mean that?
Why is he continuing to screw with this? I don't see any effective political advantage for him to continue to warn Biden off. If he invades Ukraine, we will defend. There's nothing else to say. Biden ain't Trump. Biden will not change his tune. So, what's the point? Ukraine doesn't have to be a member of NATO to be defended by another country.
Putin's gonna get a lot of Russians killed for nothing. Sad world.

Just adding: I do NOT want a war. But Putin sure does.
