WASHINGTON, D.C. As the District of Columbia faces a rare snowstorm, Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) released a statement today reminding D.C. residents that her annual provision in the Legislative Branch. Appropriations bill allows sledding on Capitol Hill. While Capitol Police has temporarily closed the West Front of the Capitol due to falling branches, she anticipates it will reopen to pedestrians, and sledders, later today.
The West Front of the Capitol is well known as the best place for sledding in D.C.s high-density urban environment, Norton said. Annually, I get a provision included in the Legislative Branch Appropriations bill directing the Capitol Police to allow sledding on Capitol grounds. This could be the only snowstorm D.C. gets this winter, and may be one of the best for sledding in years. Children and their parents should be able to enjoy sledding on one of the best hills in the city.
Children across America and particularly in D.C. have endured an extremely challenging year. Sledding is a simple, childhood thrill. It is the least we can allow for our resilient children this winter season.
Norton got her provision included in the bill after the Capitol Police began prohibiting sledding several years ago.
