I was in Costco today stocking up on vitamins because January is when theyre on sale. I was wearing an N95 mask and ignoring the nearby unmasked couple, when suddenly I was witness to a bit of covidiot performance art the fat man with the goatee started loudly telling his skinny wife in camouflage leggings what a shame it was that the mainstream media wouldnt tell people about how to prevent covid with supplements. I grabbed my multivitamins and fled but could still hear him loudly going on about vitamin D and zinc. It was like he wanted everyone to hear him and admire how clever he was.
And we wonder why covid is rampant.

(5,126 posts)I think my reply would have been something along the lines of, "Yeah! And, you know what is even more a shame? That we have adults in this country who refuse to act like it! Too bad we don't have a supplement for that one, eh?" But again... that is just me.

(8,701 posts)If you are deficient in vitamin D, that does have an impact on your susceptibility to infection. So I would not mind recommending, and I do it myself taking vitamin D supplements, Fauci, 79, said during an Instagram Live on Thursday, when actress Jennifer Garner asked Fauci about immune-boosting supplements.
In fact, researchers at the University of Chicago Medicine recently found a link between vitamin D deficiency and the likelihood of being infected with Covid-19 those with an untreated deficiency were more likely to test positive. Vitamin D is important to the function of the immune system and vitamin D supplements have previously been shown to lower the risk of viral respiratory tract infections, David Meltzer, chief of hospital medicine at UChicago Medicine and lead author of the study said in a press release on Sept. 8.)
In addition to vitamin D, Fauci said that vitamin C is a good antioxidant. So if people want to take a gram or two at the most [of] vitamin C, that would be fine, he said.

(8,701 posts)For those who dont go outdoors much like those in nursing homes, low levels could be a problem. Drs must think D levels are important because its always included in blood work. I always have great levels because Im out in the NM sun most of the year but I do add D in the winter.
Slammer
(714 posts)Yeah, when I broke my foot and it wasn't healing, they checked my vitamin D level which turned out to be 11 when 100 is average (I have no idea what they call the scale or the units on the scale).
So I've been taking 5,000 IU daily of vitamin D for the last four years. That's managed to bring up my levels to barely adequate, not even average. And that's an outrageously high dose.
As far as the interaction of vitamin D and COVID, there was research which came out in summer of 2020 IIRC which showed that people who took vitamin D were less likely to become infected. So taking it obviously isn't a terrible idea.
But it's kind of like "ducking" vs "wearing a bulletproof vest" when you're being shot at. Either is good. But neither is a substitute for the other.
BTW, I like to compare getting vaccinated to wearing a bulletproof vest when arguing with the unconvinced or stupid.
A bulletproof vest doesn't make you bulletproof. And it certainly does nothing if you get shot right between the eyes. But if you're getting shot at regularly, it's stupid to not wear the vest and get whatever protection it offers.

While I may roll my eyes at the Gladys Kravitz-level nosiness of many neighbors, it's the self-righteous and unctuous stranger like you witnessed that pushes my buttons. I guess as I've aged, I've lost patience with people who demand attention and center stage at the expense of simply letting everyone else be.

Developed in Trump's secret research facility deep underground . . .
It's a mixture of bleach, hydroxychloroquine, horse, dog and cat de-wormers (just to cover all the different covid strains).
It's irradiated with UV light just before injection.
Guaranteed to work, you won't be coming back for a second dose!
(Disclaimer: This is a joke, don't try this at home!)

(42,862 posts)... if I recall correctly, one of the things that many of the early Covid victims had in common was a deficiency in vitamin-D as well as a deficiency in zinc.
I dislike showboat people like that as well... but was he wrong? Has it been disproved that these supplements could be beneficial?

(5,383 posts)Do supplements boost your immune system?
It's not for the scientists to prove that they don't, it's up to the pill pushers to prove that they do. A double blind study of a large group of people, perhaps.
I always laugh at ads that promote cartilage healing supplements, like . . . you got bad knees? Take this stuff!
It's ground up shark cartilage, the whole skeleton of a shark is made of it, no bones at all. Monetising a waste product.
But if you eat it, will it magically go directly to your sore knees and heal your weakened, old knee cartilage?
Probably just poop it out, undigested.
But the minimum guide for supplements is that they 'must do no harm', and I guess shark cartilage and most vitamin supplements meet that requirement.

(2,100 posts)Zinc is a toxic metal that can cause significant damage of you have too much. Zinc in low levels is beneficial, but watch your intake- talk to a doctor first and have your blood checked.

(24,283 posts)I owned a small neighborhood gym for a brief time. I am not a gym person, but I saw an opportunity to buy a distressed business, fix it up and sell it. I only owned it one year. There were only about 15 pieces of equipment and some free weights. It was small enough that even though I was the only staff, I was able to personally disinfect every machine after every use. There is no way a large gym can do this. I don't even like to walk into those places.
Skittles
(153,150 posts)you don't need fancy equipment to get in shape, just do some walking and get free weights - often when I see scenes from a gym they are just doing stuff I do at home

(24,283 posts)there were a few serious fitness types, but mostly it was a core group of ladies from the neighborhood who were there for the social aspect of it. It was like a coffee shop with treadmills instead of espresso. I actually enjoyed being there, they were pretty nice people.

At least Vitamin D and Zinc are better than horse meds. Freepers are still self medicating from the farm feed store and sketchy online vendors. I just wish they would stay home instead of going to the socialist hospital as their families verbally abuse health care workers.

At the service the wife talked about how much praying they did while he was sick. Guess what, it worked, God provided smart people who created a vaccine. What more do these dumb shits want. Anyway, I contend that if Covid turned you into a Zombie these same vaccine butters would be storming vaccine centers with their guns demanding they get the vaccine first. You bet the people on The Walking Dead would love to see a vaccine.
