USA, USA, USA! US sets global record for one million cases in a single day!

Um, congrats?

The United States reported over one million new cases of COVID-19 on Monday, setting a global record for a single-day total as the ultra-transmissible omicron coronavirus variant continues its savage spread.

The daily high likely includes a backlog of cases from the holiday weekend. But with more people relying on at-home testing for identifying COVID-19 infections, the number is still probably an underrepresentation of recent cases.

Though cases are rising nationwide, the Eastern US is seeing the highest case rates and steepest increases. New York, New Jersey, and Washington, DC, have the top-three highest infection rates in the country. Louisiana, Maryland, and Alabama are reporting the largest increase in cases over the last two weeks.

The nationwide case tally for Monday is nearly double the country's previous record, set just days ago. The US reported over 1,017,000 cases Monday, beating out the daily total on December 30 of just over 585,000, according to data tracking from The New York Times. The current seven-day average of US cases is 486,658, up 239 percent over the past two weeks. The cumulative tally is over 56 million, the highest in the world.

to count and many people not even reporting anymore or going for tests, just assuming they have it and are self isolating, especially those who are vaccinated.

Those numbers are just ones that health officials are aware of from doctor's offices, clinics, and hospitals.

from spending xmas with their Dad's family. Home rapid test and symptoms, won't be reported just isolating until a negative test. It is crazy out there.

I suppose any minute now the CDC will act decisively, issuing guidance that the 5 second rule for dropped food is now 10 seconds

7. Why does everyone expect the CDC to have all the answers in an ever-changing pandemic?

Get vaccinated, avoid indoor crowds, mask up, and wait for it to pass. The constant whining doesn't help anything.

But they proved they can't do that in May of last year when they lifted mask mandates.

And here we are

With Omicron the precautions don't seem to matter as far as transmission, it's becoming not a matter of if you get it, but when you'll get it. One had an overnight stay in the hospital, the other three just had typical cold/flu symptoms so the vaccine was most likely responsible for their cases not being terrible at least.

A friend is super careful, but her unmasked son is always coming over. He spends his days golfing and his nights by going to clubs. If I mention that, her reply is, "he's being careful."

Another friend goes out to eat inside restaurants 3-4 times a week. They claim they are safe because they wear a mask upon entering.

These people are just kidding themselves.

I’m sure there are some people that never leave their house, don’t allow anyone else inside and only get necessities by delivery, then sanitize everything that’s delivered, etc.

The vast majority of us have to go to work or schoo, go grocery shopping, etc, there’s really no avoiding this variant if you’re out in public at all.

12. New York State is now going to have 2 numbers reported
Tue Jan 4, 2022, 03:01 PM
Jan 2022

1. hospitalizations of COVID-19 patients who came to the hospital because of COVID-19 symptoms and tested positive.

2. hospitalizations of patients who came to the hospital for non-COVID-19 reasons (e.g., car accident) and tested positive for COVID-19 at the hospital (i.e., asymptomatic and mild cases)

So hospitalizations is still the most important # and New York is drilling that number down into exactly how many are actually due to severe symptomatic COVID-19 infection.
