My 33-year-old daughter has COVID.
She received both vaccinations and the booster. She and her boyfriend are both pharmacists, and they started coughing a lot so chose to get tested immediately. She texted us after getting the rapid COVID test and said it was negative. She then had the PCR test. Early this morning she texted to say that it was positive. Her boyfriend has type 1 diabetes, so I am especially concerned about him. He has received both vaccinations and his booster, We havent heard yet whether or not his test was positive, but I am assuming that it will be.
I am worried, of course. They have both been so smart, so careful, always wearing their masks, limiting exposure to others. They live 600 miles away in Florida, so I can't just hop in my car and take them my homemade chicken soup (not that soup has any magical healing properties). I just want to do something....but I don't even know what that would be. I know that chances are good that they will not end up hospitalized, but COVID offers us no guarantees. I would change places with her in a heartbear if I could. My 38-year-old niece and her boyfriend just both tested positive for COVID, too. Apprently, neither of them have been vaccinated. I definitely am worried about them. I am going to be positive in my texts to my daughter and hide my anxiety. She doesnt need to be concerned about her mom's fears, that's for sure. I know that many DUers have family and friends who have tested positive for COVID. My heart goes out to each and every one of them. We are all living with so much uncertainty in terms of how a person's immune system will handle the virus. I guess that's my big concern. Anyway, thank you for reading. I just had to share the news with people I care about. DUers have always been so kind and supportive to me. Hugs to all...... ![]() ![]()

9. Vaccines don't protect your sinuses
They provide systemic antibodies, but this is a respiratory virus, so infects your sinuses and the mucosal immunity (think a runny nose when you get sick) doesn't have those antibodies. So it takes time for your body to kill it, and in the meantime, easily spreads to others. Your innards are protected by the vaccine.
While the currently approved vaccines induce systemic immune responses, they probably do not evoke mucosal immunity in form of mucosal, secretory immunoglobulin A (IgA) or tissue-resident memory T cells (TRM). Secretory, polymeric IgA can neutralize incoming viral particles at the mucosal surface before infection of epithelial cells takes place, which is important for an optimal protection against respiratory virus infections |

18. Before I got brave enough to give shots to all my foster felines, I used an "intranasal" vaccine
for the main causes of the upper respiratory illnesses. I remember reading that a benefit to it was that it helped protect the nasal passages where the viruses would enter. Perhaps we also need a vaccine that can be applied to the nasal area, especially for people whose jobs entail a lot of exposure to the public.

14. Vaccines do not provide total immunity
Omicron covid is incredibly contagious, so everyone is most likely going to be exposed eventually. Masks and social distancing will help slow the spread, but they wont' stop it.
Vaccines will help the average healthy person from getting so sick they need to be hospitalized, but it won't necessarily stop them from getting symptoms. WTF? It's a pandemic. This is what happens in pandemics. |

7. my niece and her family got it.
she's boosted, her obese husband is vaccinated and not boosted. Neither has had to go to the hospital. Their young children have been almost entirely asymptomatic and she complains of nothing other than fatigue. I think it's been the worst for her husband and he is the one I worry about.
i hear some say eventually we'll all have it and I'm still trying to beat those odds but my hope is waning that i will. ![]() |

8. My adult children' sister, niece and niece's daughters
Age 10 and 6 all have Covid all vaxxed.
Symptoms have been like a bad cold with exhaustion thrown in. Taking 8-10 days to recuperate. Thankful no breathing concerns no hospitalizations. We don’t know if it’s omicron but I guess it is judging from how contagious it is. Thank goodness they were all vaccinated. |

what's the protocol for dealing with that?
should I lock her in a room or should I lock myself in a room (both with needed items) both phizer vaxxed, both have booster shots |

19. Retest with a throat swab?
I've read that the omicron variant is more easily detected in the throat.
My sister and cousin tested negative despite getting very mild covid symptoms after attending a super spreader on December 18th. My sister's 12 year old son, who also attended the event, tested positive shortly after the event, but my sister continued to test negative. Fast forward 2+weeks and now my sister has finally tested positive. For me, it was a given that she was positive despite the previous test results because she's in the same home as a covid positive. |

20. just a guess.....
but it makes more sense to confine her. She will be bed centered anyway given the symptoms, so as long as she has access to a (ideally dedicated) bathroom and you can make food drops outside her room, she won't be put out too seriously.

11. My twin granddaughters
are 26. Both tested positive right before Christmas. They had relatively mild sore throats, sniffles and felt better 3 or 4 days later. Both vaccinated and boosted. Thank God. I'm sure your daughter will be fine. Its not the same disease we saw previously.

15. My DIL tested positive as well
Totally vaxxed and boosted, with a 2 year old (he had a couple of fussy days sick, but is fine now). They hosted out-of-state family for the holidays that also tested positive. My son has has back to back days of rapid tests that came out negative--he's always had the luck and robust health in the family! We're close enough I was able to make chicken soup and take it over(outside delivery, at a distance).
My husband rapid-tested negative after a sick night, but hasn't gotten the other test back yet. I have had my usual head-cold symptoms that I get every winter, but haven't tested. And my mom's part-time home assistant just found out her year-old grandson is in the hospital with COVID. (very scary) Testing is hard to get and results are sometimes questionable, sometimes late in arriving. We may have to accept that this is a disease that we are going to live with, like flu, but with more masks and distancing than we were accustomed to. Too many cannot--CANNOT--follow the rules because their job/financial/personal situations won't allow for even 5 days without work (we have too high a percentage of people living on the edge). Scary times. |

17. I'm so sorry.
My daughter lives only an hour away, but it might as well be 600 miles when she's sick. She teaches at the university and has had some scares, but so far has not had COVID. She is also double vaxxed and boosted, but in close proximity with so many people who are not.
I have found something we can do that really makes her day: Order food to be sent to her home. I send plenty of "sick" food like yogurt, soup, ice cream, juice and some fun things she wouldn't buy for herself. I write in the instructions to leave in the carport and then I text her when it's there. Just a thought. Maybe it's not homemade chicken soup, but it gets the job done. Hoping for the best. ![]() |

27. It may be in our house also.......
My 26 y.o. twins still live with us. Our son was told at work that his manager was positive for covid, and at least one other co-worker has it. This morning he said he had a sore throat, fatigue, and congestion.
We packed him off to the basement (finished with bed and bath) and a test kit. If that is negative, we will ask him to go for a pcr test. But it doesn't look good. He is young, fit, and vaxed/boosted so hopefully it will pass quickly. Don't know if we can avoid it, but we will try. |

31. I'm sorry
It is everywhere now.
My father in law has it. He is very unhealthy in general. Diabetes, high cholesterol, obese. But he had vaccines and booster, and his only symptoms so far have been headache, sniffles and general achiness. Only felt bad for three days, and he said mild cold like symptoms. He's on day 7 and feels totally fine now. (Though still tested positive on rapid antigen test.) I know you are worried because of existing conditions, but your daughter and son in law did EVERYTHING right to protect themselves. I'm so grateful my in-laws were able to be vaccinated bc I don't think this would be the outcome if he wasn't. I hope you find that it's similarly easy for your crew! |

32. Delivery food services.
Even if it's Walmart or Target. Easy to fix comfort food that diabetics can have. Those diabetic Sorbitol lozenges for sore throats. Cold and flu symptom relief items.
Garbage bags, toilet paper, tissue paper, disposable silverware , bowls and cups (those 16 oz coffee cups with lids are great for juice or teas if they're feeling sick). When my sister in law (a home healthcare nurse, so it was always a matter of "when" ) got breakthrough COVID last month, we sent a big care package delivered to their house out in the middle of the Texas Hill country so brother didn't have to break quarantine and leave her for a couple hours going out to get groceries and other stuff. Do they have pets? Delivery pet supplies are also welcome. Good luck. Haele |
