bishop, known for his staunch anti-vaccination and mask stance, has died of COVID-19 over a month after contracting the virus. His condition had deteriorated after having suffered severe brain damage.
Metropolitan Kosmas of Aetolia and Acarnania breathed his last at a hospital ICU in Western Greece on Monday, reported ekathimerini. The 76-year-old bishop's ICU admission sparked controversy among his critics.
-----------------------------
"God does not allow you to be infected. God does not infect! It is a holy place, the temple is heavenly," he had controversially said at that time.
------------
Kosmas tested positive for the virus on Nov. 18. His health worsened after which he was rushed to a hospital on Dec. 1 though he was against hospitalization, according to Orthodox Times. He was intubated but had to be transferred to Evangelismos Hospital. There, he suffered brain damage, which ruled out any chances of a return to service.
He was extubated a few days ago and as per the medical protocol, he had to undergo a tracheostomy. Despite that, he couldn't be saved

(3,471 posts)Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

Sirach 38
Give doctors the honor they deserve, for the Lord gave them their work to do.[a] 2 Their skill came from the Most High, and kings reward them for it. 3 Their knowledge gives them a position of importance, and powerful people hold them in high regard.
4 The Lord created medicines from the earth, and a sensible person will not hesitate to use them. 5 Didn't a tree once make bitter water fit to drink, so that the Lord's power might be known? 6 He gave medical knowledge to human beings, so that we would praise him for the miracles he performs. 7-8 The druggist mixes these medicines, and the doctor will use them to cure diseases and ease pain. There is no end to the activities of the Lord, who gives health to the people of the world.

(32,449 posts)On Tuesday, 27 July, 2021, at the end of the Vespers service for the feast of St Irene Chrysovalantou in Thessalonica, Metropolitan Varnavas of Neapolis gave a sermon, as is customary. When he began to speak about the importance of being vaccinated, in order to protect the elderly and each other, the parishioners began to strongly protest. They denounced the Metropolitan, demanding that he stop speaking about vaccinations, and instead preach about the saint, whose memory they had gathered to celebrate.
Throughout the sermon, the parishioners repeatedly shouted the following: It is a disgrace, outrageous! This is not a spiritual sermon, speak to us about the saint. If we wanted to hear about vaccines, we would be watching SKAI TV! A large number of parishioners walked out of the church in disgust and protest, while the Metropolitan was still preaching.

(1,178 posts)Interesting. They'll trust their faith over a vaccination and the medical community. Yet, when their health worsens, they don't rush to a church and have their faith heal them. Nope, they rush to a hospital.
