"SNIP.......
Punchbowl News PunchBowl News: We didnt anticipate President Joe Biden going so hard after former President Donald Trump, nor did we anticipate how overwhelmingly silent Republicans were going to be today. The GOP leadership in both chambers seemed almost overwhelmed by the moment. Here and there, individual GOP lawmakers took shots at Biden and the Democrats for over-hyping the attack or using todays ceremony to score points against Republicans. And conservative media criticized Biden for his barrage against Trump, although Trump wasnt named. But largely, Republicans ceded the field to Democrats.
The Republicans absence stuck out like a sore thumb: Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) and former Vice President Dick Cheney were the only Republicans in the building today. Thats not surprising, but its still pretty striking. Just a year ago, the Capitol was under attack and the entire Congress was stunned.

(53,947 posts)I mean, this was about commemorating, and to an extent morning, the damage done to our institutions and our democracy on January 6th
Like, if one of your family members was murdered, would you want the killer to show up at their memorial service? No, of course not! The perpetrators of a crime have no business pretending to console the grief of those they've harmed. There's exactly two Republicans who have a right to be depression when we take a moment to meditate on the threats to democracy. And they probably have committee work to do.

(82,849 posts)Whatever a Republican has to say is likely to piss off a segment of their base. There's no upside to saying anything, either in defense or condemnation of democracy.
