Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsRep. Hakeem Jeffries talked about the Filbuster and Super Majorities...
He was on WNYC AM/FM Brian Lehrer's show yesterday.
As most of us know/have learned The Filibuster is
-not- mentioned in Our Constitution.
He pointed our what is mentioned - a Super Majority.
There are 4 areas where the SM is put in play.
The one we know most recently - to convict
a President after Impeachment has been approved.
To countermand a Presidential Veto.
To approve a Treaty.
To evoke the 25fth Amendment.
He said they're still trying work on the filibuster re voting rights.

(14,880 posts)who brought it up.
Jefferies just said something vague about it as his answer.
I'm glad he brought it up because I while I know about
60 votes for impeachment, probably the veto & 25fth -
I'd forgotten about treaties, and it reenforced the others.
Pus I'd forgotten the 60 votes meant Super Majority. 👍

(15,325 posts)Because it was actually quite good info that many need educating about?
It was a clear simple explanation of the limits & the letter of the process.
He answered it directly & simply what is already stated in the laws of the House.
He was correct in defining the question presented to him.
Was he s'pose to lie?
It's not a secret & every House member should already know the answer to the question & be able to state it as clearly & directly as Rep Jeffries did.
He gave a clear understanding to any who were listening.
It was appreciated.
Thank you Rep Hakeem Jeffries.
Our next Democratic Speaker of the House of Representatives.
