Man accused of killing two trophy bull elk thought they were doe

CENTRE COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ)– A Clarence man faces charges after he allegedly shot two trophy bull elk but claims he mistook them as doe.

Just a little before 7 p.m. on Dec. 4, 39-year old Christopher Brooks reported that he shot two elk in Boggs Township right after dusk, according to the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Brooks realized that he shot elk instead of doe after he got a closer look and saw the antlers and their size.

When Brooks presented his hunting license officials say that he did not have the proper paperwork to be hunting in the area.

Brooks faces charges of unlawful killing of big game during a closed season and also for hunting violations. He awaits a preliminary hearing yet to be scheduled.

But in my experience legal hunting light is typically 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset for game like deer and elk.

It isn't uncommon to hunt certain game animals at night though, like coyote, racoon, and feral hogs. Each state has different rules, regulations, and guidelines for their seasons.

Turned himself in to game officials. He didn’t try to cover it up or take off or anything. Should always properly identify your target though, mistaking an elk for a deer is a pretty big screw up, after dusk too, he broke every hunting regulation at once lol.

but my own personal knowledge of such laws in general is that in season for eligible species, they provide for the protection of does, and usually only offer ONE day a season in which does may be hunted. So this sounds weird to me.
