(933 posts)All that remains is to reach L2, align the mirrors and allow the device to cool for five months.
Well done!

(17,901 posts)An achievement as difficult as landing on the moon. I've been following and thought surely they'll have a serious glitch with something. Nope. Near perfect deployment.

(19,190 posts)To NASA's credit, they did a remarkable fix on Hubble in space, and we were treated to some amazing pictures once they tweaked the mirrors.

(58,785 posts)correction, or what should be, takes place far out and then Webb just continues on out until slipping into orbit at L2.
There are already a few previous projects orbiting there, didn't check from which nations, but there's plenty of room and I kind of like that Webb won't be all alone nearly 1M miles out.

(8,572 posts)Edited to add, unless we attract the attention of a marauding extraterrestrial race who's better at destroying shit than earth humans and they get the contract to end us before we make sure nobody in the universe can have nice things. Then we might have a problem. On the up side, I'm in my early 60's now so I might not be around when it happens...

(1,639 posts). . . That we don't want to attract any attention from advanced extraterrestrial races because they could easily destroy us. And that is a valid point. On the other hand, if their technology trajectory is anything like ours, the urge to destroy and crush and oppress would wreck their own civilization first.
The mere fact that they were able to focus their collective will on exploring the Universe might be an indication that these hypothetical aliens managed to get their shit together and develop not just advanced technology, but advanced morality.
This is just conjecture, of course. But we humans have only managed to develop advances in our admittedly limited space exploration by working together and setting aside our narrow nation foci for a shared goal.

(14,848 posts)page. I just hadn't checked it yet today.
The sheer effort of making sure every piece that was supposed to unlatch, move, lock in to place etc...
...just...Wow! 👍💖
Something about those protective shields moving into place!
Now we have to wait those two weeks to arrive, final alignment of the mirrors, calibrations, then that five months cool down.
Gah, I'm impatient now! 😄

(989 posts)I can't fully unclench until it reaches L2, but I'm greatly relieved that it's leaped one of the most difficult hurdles in its deployment.
The images will blow our minds.

(10,826 posts)This is an unbelievable achievement. There were about gazillion details that could have gone south but the deployment has been flawless.
Bravo to NASA and everyone who worked and supported this mission. This will be a huge advancement in scientific knowledge for the entire planet.
Well done.
