They want to abolish public education. That's the campaign, that's the plan.

(154 posts)I've taught in both Public and charter high school. I thought that my charter school experience was pretty good, until I got a job in a well run High school in a well resourced District that has awesome colleagues and both departmental and district co-planning and curriculum development. When I look back at how and what I taught as the only Chemistry teacher at the charter school, compared to the lessons I teach now in my public high school...it's sobering. There I taught from a text book. Now I teach using activities to try to get students to derive answers to fundamental questions. At my current HS, the AVERAGE student graduates with 6 AP classes under their belt. At the charter school we could offer only 1 or 2 AP science courses; at my current school, we offer 5 AP science courses and 4 additional elective courses where students can earn college credit at the same time as earning HS credits. Maybe we're more the exception than the rule, but I don't know how a charter school would muster the resources to be able to offer the same experience.

(4,388 posts)She's a board certified OB-GYN who makes light-hearted, scientifically informed and pretty tame YouTube videos about pregnancy and sexual health. Teachers at a school district in Alaska were proposing to use as supplemental curriculum.
Some of the people on the school board hit the roof and called the teachers on the carpet to berate them for wanting to teach kids about Plan B and anything other than abstinence-only. So she did a commentary video on the school board meeting pointing out how absurd it is that middle-aged men think they know more about what kids need to know about sexual health than a board certified doctor.
The video is a perfect example of the mindset of many people attacking schools today ("In my heart I just feel it's wrong" when all their arguments have been shot down). It's really sobering that these kinds of decisions are being made in some areas by people who are dumber than a bag of hammers but are sure they know everything.
