Best online news subscriptions

I've always despised paying for online news, especially when I can get plenty of it for free from sources like CNN, NPR, ABC, etc. but I'm thinking about breaking down and paying for a subscription to one of the many online news providers that charge a fee.

There are so many paid news sources that I'd be spending a fortune to be able to get news from a variety of them. A perfect compromise, in my view, would be for multiple online news providers to form a coalition and offer news from multiple sources for an affordable price.

But I don't see that happening, and would love to hear opinions on which single news source you'd pay for. NY Times, Washington Post, Atlantic, Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, or some other one that I've missed?

Your local librarian has all the details.

Happy New Year.

Send some money to ProPublica. They are a non-profit and are one of the few news organization that still does good investigative journalism.

Isn't it a shame that reporters and journalists expect to receive a salary. What happened to the simple satisfaction of a job well done?

Personally, I pay for the Times, Post, Daily News, Guardian, the Atlantic and Apples News aggregator. Something for everyone to hate.....

I am sure this will be wildly unpopular here, however ...

I have an online sub to the Wall Street Journal.

The slant is certainly there concerning US politics but the financial market coverage is excellent and the world news is solid. My sub includes Barron and Market Watch. Used to get the print version as well but found I was reading much more online so I just stick with that.

I find it to be a solid source.

but I always hold out for a cheaper rate. I sometimes have to skip a few months until they come down on the price to renew. I just can't afford the full rate at this time having been out of work for over two years. There's usually a special rate for first time subscribers, (I got a dollar a week for each the first time I subscribed.) It's more for renewal but if you wait out a few months, it will come down to about 30% of what they normally ask. I also pay for The Daily Beast but that is much cheaper anyway.

At renewal time, I always call & tell them the truth, that I can't afford anymore than $1/wk, and both papers always continue the dollar-per-week rate for another year. Call them today to tell them you'll have to cancel if you can't get a lower rate. Good luck.

I get student/educational rates on all except for the WSJ and the FT, which I get free as my firm pays for them.

Many times I've seen news here that don't make the papers or the TV for a day or two.
We have members from around the world for the global perspective, and members from
every state for that slant.
Unlike some others here, I can't afford online subscriptions to newspapers or magazines.
I miss the days when I did buy the Tucson paper, or even the small local paper. Back then they
were thick with lots of classified ads and the Sunday paper had the NYT crossword. Now they are
less than half the size and cost more.

But I usually start right here on DU. Somehow news pops up here really fast.

BTW, I had a 35 year career in broadcast news, so I'm definitely a news junkie.

(legal) means, like the library digital content.

You can get deals on WAPO if you watch closely--either directly from them or through Amazon.

That said, I really really really think supporting your local newspaper is paramount. So, Denver Post and occasionally one of the better front range, CO newspapers get my $$ as well.

It's a London based newspaper that covers a lot of world news, plus it seems to scoop a lot of American papers.
