Locally, about half of town's waste is diverted from the landfill by the recycling program. I've never seen an analysis that it reduces greenhouse gas, but it does extend the life of the landfill.

Tom Walker as Jonathan Pie doing a fake documentary where he grouses about doing this story about climate change.
The part of it that I think is so true happens at 10:00 minutes in. It's basically what you are saying.
and yet at the end he cleans up the beach.
